Entei (Japanese: エンテイ Entei) is a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
It is, along with Raikou and Suicune, one of the legendary beasts created by Ho-Oh after the burning of the Brass Tower.
Biology
Physiology
Entei is a lion-like creature covered in brown fur with a long, thick mane covering its neck. It has gray plates surrounding the cape that makes it look as if smoke is coming out of a crater on its back. Entei has white paws and black cuff-like bands on its legs, It has a red face with a white plate that resembles a handlebar mustache on its face, and a three-pointed yellow crest on its forehead. Entei's head appears to resemble a kabuto, a samurai helmet.
It is said that an Entei is born whenever a volcano erupts. It is also said that whenever Entei roars, a volcano erupts somewhere in the world.
Gender differences
Entei, being a legendary Pokémon, is a genderless species.
Special abilities
Entei can shoot flames that are hotter than volcanic magma. It also sports limited mental powers. When it roars, it can make a volcano erupt on another part of the globe.
Behavior
Habitat
As a member of the legendary beast trio, Entei are constantly on the move with no set place to hang around in. However, it is speculated that Entei (as well as the other legendary beasts) is not a unique species because Pokédex entries state that an Entei is born every time a new volcano is born and, in Pokémon Ranger, Solana or Lunick say "Wow! An Entei!" rather than saying "Wow! Entei!"
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
In the anime
Entei was a major character in the movie Spell of the Unown. In the movie, an illusionary Entei appeared to Molly Hale after she made a wish on the Unown.
A real Entei later appeared in the episode Entei at Your Own Risk.
In the manga
Pokémon Special
Entei was awakened by Yellow along with its two counterparts, and the three raced around Kanto and Johto looking for Trainers to help them defeat the Mask of Ice to free Ho-Oh. Entei eventually pairs up with Blaine, and later Silver. In this manga, Entei's fire has a healing effect, burning away disease and evil auras. Blaine uses this fire to burn away the Mewtwo cells infecting his arm, and DJ Mary's Smeargle copies this power using Sketch.
In the TCG

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl
When released from a Poké Ball, Entei unleashes a volcanic Fire Spin that deals a lot of damage to any opponents that get trapped in it.
Game data
NPC appearances
- Pokémon Ranger: Gordor considers Entei to be the best and most loyal of the legendary trio. The player captures it when it is first unleashed in the Jungle Relic but it is still taken by the Go-Rock Squad, using their new Super Styler. Entei later acts as the final boss of the game.

Trivia
- Entei's normal colors during Pokémon Gold and Silver depicted it possessing red fur and its mane growing around its neck similar to a lion. All of this was changed in Pokémon Crystal.
- Entei can be seen in the photograph above the green table in the Misthouse Lodge in Pokémon Ranger.
- Entei shares the same species name with Quilava and Typhlosion. They are all known as the Volcano Pokémon.
- Entei is somehow able to use Iron Tail, although it lacks a visible tail. However, a picture from a book in the third movie shows it with a long, catlike tail.
- Entei, along with Raikou and Suicune, had their backsprites changed during the transition from Diamond and Pearl to Platinum.
Origin
It has aspects of several different animals, but most prominently it resembles a male lion. Entei may possibly be based on Aterui, the chief of the Emishi, who was later labelled as a demon called 'Aka-gashira' (Red-Head)
Name origin
Entei's Japanese name is likely a combination of 炎天 enten, blazing heat, or just 炎 en – an alternate reading of honō – flame, and 皇帝 kōtei, emperor.
