Glitch Pokémon

A glitch Pokémon is a Pokémon that exists in the games due to a programming or level design oversight, and/or for beta testing. As they were not intentionally placed inside the game by Nintendo or Game Freak, some of them might be hazardous to saved data. Many were originally supposed to be placeholders for unused hexadecimal addresses in the game.

In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow

This is a chart of all 34 known glitch Pokémon that can be found in the wild in the Red, Blue and Yellow versions without using a cheating device[1]:

Until the discovery of the Mew glitch, the only glitch Pokémon which could be caught in Red, Blue and Yellow without the use of a cheating device were Missingno., 'M and 3TrainerPoké. The Mew glitch allowed an additional 20 glitch Pokémon to be discovered in those versions.

Non-obtainable glitch Pokémon

The following glitch Pokémon can only be found by using a cheating device such as GameShark and cannot be found using the Mew glitch or any other known in-game trick. They are sometimes seen being used by glitch Trainers.

In Generation II

The following glitch Pokémon can be found in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, but require GameShark to complete them.
(Note: after capturing these Pokémon, the game's graphics have been known to malfunction, and the player will find themselves in a Glitch City-like area.)[2][3]

Notes

  • Missingno.'s special stats for the Mew trick vary (see here).
  • The Yellow version Missingno. is different from the Red/Blue Missingno., but both share the same name. For the Yellow version Missingno., using a Pokémon in Method #3 of the Mew glitch with a special stat of 31, 32, 61, 62 , 63, 67, 68, or 69 would make it appear([1]). Missingno will revert to level 0 if leveled up to over level 255 with Rare Candies or to level 100 if it fights in battle and wins.
  • The Pokémon 'M, 3TrainerPoké, Charizard 'M, Q, B, 4B 8 4 8, PkMnaPkMnfPkMnk, Glitch (D8), ( I' and $ are the only known catchable Glitch Pokémon that cannot be directly caught using the Mew glitch.
    • 'M and 3TrainerPoke cannot be caught using the Mew glitch because the special stat required for method #3 of the Mew glitch is 0, a number which no Pokémon has.
    • Charizard 'M and Q cannot because Q can only be found by evolving a 44Hy, and Charizard 'M can only be found by trading a Q. The special stat numbers which would cause Charizard 'M and Q to appear in a Mew glitch-type battle freeze the game.
    • B can only be found by trading a 4B 8 4 8, 4B 8 4 8 can only be found by evolving a PkMnaPkMnfPkMnk, PkMnaPkMnfPkMnk can only be found by trading a Glitch (D8), and Glitch (D8) can only be found by evolving a Machoke at level 234.
    • $ can only be found by trading a ( I', and ( I' can only be found by evolving a 7g.
  • The 34 catchable glitch Pokémon, plus the original 151 Pokémon, brings the total number of catchable Pokémon in Red, Blue, and Yellow to 185.
  • The characteristics of one glitch Pokémon usually do not carry over to its equivalent between Red and Blue and Yellow.
  • Catching a glitch Pokémon will sometimes cause Pokédex data to appear which may freeze the game. To avoid this, the player should have "owned" or ("seen" in some cases) for a specific Pokémon. For example, h POKé will cause the game to freeze if its Pokédex data is seen, but if a player has Gengar listed as "owned", no faulty Pokédex data will appear.
