Every game that utilizes the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection requires players to use a unique 12-digit code known as a Friend Code. It is generated when the player logs onto it for the first time, and it is used to identify other players on online play.
Buying games
The Wii allows players to buy WiiWare and Virtual Console games from the Wii Shop Channel. Players must use Nintendo Points, which are bought with real money.
The Nintendo DSi, on the other hand, allows players to buy DSiWare games on the DSi Shop for Nintendo Points as well.
In the games
The first Pokémon games to utilize the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection were Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, with Platinum following soon after. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection allows players to connect with the games of other players all over the world. Using it, players can battle and trade with others. Certain event key items such as Secret Key and Member Card are or have been distributed through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for players of Platinum for a limited time, though these times are usually different for Japanese versions than that of American and PAL versions. Pokémon can also be distributed, though there have only been two Pokémon distributions to date, both of which were only for the Japanese game versions.
The following are Pokémon games that utilize Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection:
- Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Versions
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness
- Pokémon Platinum Version
- Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
- Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions
- Pokémon Battle Revolution
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- My Pokémon Ranch
- Pokémon Rumble
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare)
