Generation V Egg Group data

Seeing as how it's apparently incredibly difficult to trust new users with simple tasks here, I reckoned I'd just provide you with [the data] and allow you to handle it as you see fit. —hexagonTHEORY 08:49, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

I was actually trying to get the opinions of a few other admins first, in particular for the ordering. I'll give you the honor of adding it to the page. Go ahead if you like. Werdnae (talk) 09:00, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I was under the impression that the template automatically padded the numbers to a length of three. Either way, thank you; I shall remember that in future. —hexagonTHEORY 09:30, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. Most templates like that don't pad the numbers, partly because it can then be sort of spoofed for the formes and stuff. Thank you for getting it all done. Werdnae (talk) 09:36, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, that makes sense; those alternate Pokémon can be hell. You're welcome, but I won't lie; it was mostly all perl's doing. ^_^ —hexagonTHEORY 09:40, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

PokéPark Pictures (cont.)

Hey Werdnae, look what I found. :D I asked the guy who ripped them if we could use them and he said we could. Maybe put them on the side games template or something. Like to the left of the Pad description. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 00:54, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Werdnae, I would like to make a suggestion: I think putting the cell directly to the left of the Pad entries would be perfect, but d'you reckon you could just display the image in the actual template, then I'll just upload each of the images as PokePark001.png, etc. It seems like that would make things move far smootherly. —hexagonTHEORY 01:11, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
...well at any rate, Random Talking Bush sent all the individual images to me in PNG format to save us the trouble of cropping them all out of The Spriter's Resource. Let's decide on what we want the template to look like before deciding the file names perhaps. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 01:20, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Haha. It positively tickles me that none of you seem to have ever heard of programmers. Nearly all popular programming languages today are perfectly suited for ripping sections of images, so that wouldn't have been a problem; still, that was quite nice of him. Regarding the template, what could possibly be more fitting than putting the image to the left of the Pad entry? —hexagonTHEORY 01:25, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
For the file names we'll go with PPW###.png with the hashes being the ndex number. That has the added advantage of meaning that the image won't need to be added to each individual page. The images are 64px square right? I've made a quick mockup using one of the MD images stretched to 64x64 pixels to give an idea of size. Werdnae (talk) 02:47, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Alright. Yeah, they're 64x64. One final question and I'll start uploading them. The ###'s, do I use national dex or the Pokepark pad numbers? Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 02:50, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Ndex numbers. That way it's more consistent and there's no need for an extra parameter on the template. Werdnae (talk) 02:51, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Psst, we're all done uploading the PPW imagery; when d'you reckon they'll be displaying in the template? —hexagonTHEORY 04:33, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
How about... now. You may need to purge the cache to get it to show up on a specific page. Don't worry about manually doing them all though, the cache updates often enough on its own. Werdnae (talk) 04:55, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Glorious. It really does look quite snazzy. I think Jo might hate me now, though... —hexagonTHEORY 05:17, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Looks pretty good. =D In other news, I've been working on the Guardian Signs browser descriptions and I'm almost done with that as well. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 04:58, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

After getting all those icons uploaded, still think I should go ahead and upload those images I sent you via photobucket? (Sorry if it gets annoying always asking permission for everything[and for apologizing all the time], but I fear making a mistake will cost me. D:) Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 08:47, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

I'd say just hold on to them for now. We may want to use them at some point, but the icons will be enough for the moment. And don't worry too much about making mistakes - everyone makes them at some point. It's always okay for you to ask if you aren't sure though. Werdnae (talk) 09:18, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Generation V Experience Yields...

Nearly every single Pokémon had its Experience yield modified in some way in Generation V; any ideas regarding how to get this data into the system without having to hand-modify almost 500 Pokémon pages? The only thing I could think of was a massive switch case; while it would be stupid ugly, it would get the job done much more efficiently. What do you think about the matter? —hexagonTHEORY 05:48, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

The EV yield remains the same, right? If so the new Exp. yield could potentially replace the Battle Exp. part of the infobox - that number itself is just a formula of the Base, with the box taking up the whole width for Gen IV Pokémon (or it could have a -- like the dex numbers section). Unless the new yields are mathematically related to the old ones through a single formula then there's no way to get around adding it to the pages for all 493 Pokémon that need it unfortunately. Werdnae (talk) 09:27, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
I do think that the Battle Exp. could be done away with. However, I still don't understand why it would have to be manually added; why couldn't a huge switch case be used in the template to provide the correct Exp. yield based on the National Dex number? —hexagonTHEORY 20:15, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Huge switches (i.e. those with many outcomes) require a lot of server resources and cause stability issues. That's why templates have parameters, rather than just a pagename switcher. It also means that if, say, someone makes a mistake putting it in, people who notice can just fix it. Since high-use templates get protected (again, mainly to reduce server stress) they wouldn't be able to if it was just a template with a giant switch. Werdnae (talk) 20:24, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Erm, the switch case would only need to take into account the parameter passed as the National Dex and then display the correct Exp. yield accordingly; that's not server-intensive at all; it doesn't have to access any other data on the server. As for being protected, why would any other user ever need to modify the template? It would be static data, would it not? —hexagonTHEORY 00:26, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
People make mistakes in entering the data, and often it won't get noticed for a while. And it's still a very big switch, as it would need 493 possibilities. Switch size for the server load is mainly determined by the number of different outcomes available, not the size of the input itself. Putting it into that template as a permanent switch like that would cause massive load on the server, and could potentially cause them to crash. Werdnae (talk) 00:50, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure you fully understand how the #switch functionality works on a wiki, but I'm nearly positive it doesn't require a call to the server. All it does is check a value given to it and display responses based on this value. To implement the new Exp. yields, all we would be doing is passing the ndex value, which it takes from having already been declared in the template, to a switch and displaying the corresponding number. As for people inputting incorrect data, you don't seem to have caught on to the fact that I already have this data; in fact, I've already updated the List of Pokémon by effort value yield to reflect the new numbers. I like the idea of having Bulbapedia be consistent and up-to-date with its information, and that's why I'm interested in having the new numbers put up; still, I'd like for it to be done in the most efficient way possible, and that certainly doesn't mean doing it manually. [Here] is the switch case as it would need to go up somewhere in the PokémonInfobox template. Please, I implore you, drop it in (perhaps in the Battle Exp. area like you suggested, but maybe even in the actual Exp. field if you're as interested in having Bulbapedia be accurate as I am) and see if it causes any server issues. Assuming it does, I'd be happy to set something up to do it manually; if it doesn't mess anything up, however, it will be quite a joyous occasion to be able to say that Bulbapedia is striving ever closer to completion. —hexagonTHEORY 01:15, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
I don't know the inner workings of the switch function, but what I do know is that we have been specifically told by none other than big boss Archaic that they have been determined to be problematic, and to avoid them where possible. I don't know if you were around for it, but the wiki was locked down in June as it was resulting in a 503 for about 9 out of every 10 page loads. That was largely because there used to be a switch in the roundy template, which was used everywhere. Once the switch was removed and the template broken into nine pieces as a result the issues pretty much went away. Theoretically, the switch should work fine. The servers unfortunately just aren't stable enough to have them everywhere. For the record, Bulbagarden has five servers, four of which are used for Bulbawiki (Bulbapedia, the Archives and Bulbanews). As a result I cannot and will not add that switch to the template. It will have to be a parameter. Werdnae (talk) 01:32, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

What, you mean I have to give you another one? D: But seriously, you did good. *ruffles hair* —darklordtrom 08:00, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks trom. And the other people that decide this stuff. Werdnae (talk) 08:28, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Userpage

can I have a userpage? StripedRK9 00:14, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

You will be able to create your userpage once you have been a user for a certain time and have made a certain number of edits to the mainspace. Just keep contributing and you will be able to make it eventually. Werdnae (talk) 01:55, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Outrage

User:Littlmiget123 would like to have a picture of Clair's Dragonair using Outrage in the manga, since it isn't so easy to describe the move with just words. Can you upload the pic? --FinnishPokéFan92 12:28, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately not. I don't have that volume yet, sorry. Werdnae (talk) 19:04, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
That's OK. Just please upload it when you can. :) --FinnishPokéFan92 10:57, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

sorry.

i thought it'd go in pikamander's,not deadlymenthane's talk page. :(----EBL (talk to me!) 01:19, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

No problem. Now you know. Werdnae (talk) 01:34, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

hey

can you be my buddy too? Alika0303 04:54, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

If you want help, just let me know what you want. If you'd like people to chat to you'd be better off looking at the social groups on the forums. Werdnae (talk) 04:58, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Is adopting a feature on here?

On Wikipedia itself, there's an "Adopt a user" thing. Does Bulbapedia have this too? --'Snorlax 00:56, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

No, we don't currently. If you'd like help with something I'd be happy to though. Just ask for it. Even if I can't help myself, I'll be able to direct you to a user who can. Werdnae (talk) 01:10, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Found an offensive name!

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Talk:Shiny_Pok%C3%A9mon Look at the first guy who's posting and how he signs his posts! Thought I'd let you know! - unsigned comment from 'Snorlax (talkcontribs)

Thanks for that. I'll probably just let it be since that user hasn't done anything since 2008, and even then only made that comment. If he/she does come back, that sig would fall foul of the signature policy (which was introduced after then), so that shouldn't be an issue either. Werdnae (talk) 02:16, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Error?

I just uploaded Sekka City.png for Sekka City Page and it doesn't seem to be showing up PBnJamz 04:27, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Purging the cache fixed it. If purging the cache doesn't it can be that the Archives sometimes take a while to properly sync with Bulbapedia, in which case just waiting a while will fix it. Werdnae (talk) 04:29, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Unprotect

Hey Werd, can you please unprotect the M14 article? We do have a confirmation now. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 11:26, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Nate got it. Werdnae (talk) 19:20, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

But...

About Takharii's Stuff, I shouldn't of been deleted. It is not even my site! Cool469talk 08:00, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

  1. For a fansite to get an article on Bulbapedia it must be very notable There are only a small number of sites that are notable enough for an article. All website articles should be made with permission from an admin. That site is not notable enough for an article at the current time.
  2. As you have been told before, you must not create an article on a website you are affiliated with. As you yourself admitted on the page, your website is affiliated with that website. Therefore you may not create an article on it.
  3. On a somewhat related note, you need to stop creating pages with which you can advertise your site. If you are just here to try and get more exposure for your site then I'd suggest you stop, or you may find yourself with a very, very lengthy block.
As you can see, it was deleted for a reason. It will not be restored. Werdnae (talk) 08:10, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm not here to advertise my site, I'm here because I found this wiki and I love Pokémon so I joined. Cool469talk 08:13, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Really???

Really? What is so wrong with metioning Mew the Pokémon in this page? Cool469talk 08:57, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

What is wrong with mentioning your own site on one of the most visited pages on the wiki? Does nothing in that strike you as odd? It's called advertising. And it is not allowed. If you wish to advertise your site there are plenty of places you can go to get them to put links to your site on other sites. You'll notice one thing about them all - you have to pay for it. So why should we let you advertise your site for free, hmm?
Also, please stop linking your site when you mention it in your comments. It leaves a redlink which causes it to be put on the wanted pages list, when at the moment, we do not want an article about it. Only use links like [[this]] for existing pages. Werdnae (talk) 09:07, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks.

Mind taking care of Gen I as well? It has the same problem. --P o L i 19:15, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. And sure, I can do that. Werdnae (talk) 19:16, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, shoot. One more thing. List of items by index number (DS). I tried implementing the coding you used and formatting it to fit that page, but it screwed up the image. Ugh, I dunno what to do. Sorry to bother you, thanks again. ^^;;; --P o L i 20:21, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

BW015

Hey werdnae, ok so for bw015 there was a character chart revealing all the pokemon and humans that would appear in this episode. This chart was revealed by sunnyshore and the source he got itt from is 100% confirmed real since he actually brought the artwork. He has also said that any one who is not on the character sheet will not be in the episode. Now I posted on the talkpage of this episode asking if it is ok for me to add these people and pokemon to the page yesterday. Since then there has beenn no response so I just put them in there but posted again on the talkpage stating why I did so. About an hour later I checked back and someone had reverted the changes but there was still no answers in the talkpage. I was wondering if you could take a look at it. The character chart is on bulbagarden and serebii forums and is in the bw015 thread. Thanks before hand :)RBK 02:49, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

I've added it back in. It's kind of a shaky ground area. We like to wait for it to air, but then we're normally going off previews, which are known to troll. I don't think we've ever managed to get a character sheet like that which has an actual episode on it before. I left most of the reasoning in the relevant section that ended up on your talk page anyway, so I'm sure you already know most of this. Werdnae (talk) 04:12, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again Werdnae :)RBK 04:29, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
No problem. Werdnae (talk) 04:33, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Template problem

I was wondering if you can fix this template, when entering a different form it shows "Expression error: Unrecognised word" instead of the image and name. Pikiwyn talk 23:39, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

It should work now. The problem was that it was using the national dex number to determine whether there was a Pokémon there by determining whether it's value was greater than zero (which was also the default). It broke down when a letter was entered, as it can only do maths with numbers. I've removed the default from that bit and changed it so that it doesn't use a maths function. In other words, do exactly what you were doing before, and now it should work. (I hope). Werdnae (talk) 01:26, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Yip it works now, thanks! Pikiwyn talk 10:33, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

I Have A Doubt

i want to add some sprites for multiple plasma grunts solving the multiple opponent problem for plasma grunts like the twin battles. the page said if in doubt check with admin so?--Facade11663 02:38, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Is there like. . . a combined sprite for the tag battles, or are they just two separate sprites like in Gen IV? I haven't played BW. I believe the templates are currently set up to use two individual sprites, but if they have a single combined sprite in Gen V then we should have that instead. Werdnae (talk) 02:48, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
awesome can you point me to the two individual sprite template :)--Facade11663 02:53, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
Oh, hang on, I was thinking of the party template, which wouldn't be used for the grunts. (if you're interested though, it can be seen here) The grunts seem to just have a note that they are a double battle on their prize, as seen here, but otherwise being treated as separate trainers. Doing so also helps show which Pokémon belong to which grunt. Werdnae (talk) 03:02, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
works perfectly for it thanks.--Facade11663 03:11, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Sandbox

Hi, I am new to this wiki, so I was wondering, how can I make my own Sandbox? Mesuxelf 16:32, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
