Scraggy (Japanese: ズルッグ Zuruggu) is a dual-type Dark/Fighting Pokémon.

It evolves into Scrafty starting at level 39.

Biology

Physiology

Scraggy is a bipedal lizard-like Pokémon. Its oval-shaped eyes are set to the sides of its head, and its teeth are like those of Croagunk. It sports a small red scale on its yellow head. Below the yellow portion of its head, its body is cream-colored, with thin arms and a red, scaled belly. It carries its yellow, molted skin around its legs, resembling trousers, although some of the skin seems to trail off to form or cover a tail.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Scraggy has a rubbery pelt that reduces the damage Scraggy takes from attacks, as well as a very thick cranium.

Behavior

Scraggy raises its pelt to its neck for defense. Scraggy will attack any foe that so much as meets its gaze with a Headbutt.

Trivia

Origin

Scraggy holding its baggy pants

Scraggy appears to be based on a sort of lizard. In addition, with its moulted skin "pants", Scraggy seem to encapsulate stereotypes of youth subcultures of the past several decades, namely hip hop or punk.

Name origin

Scraggy literally means "thin or scrawny" in the English language. It could also be a combination of scrappy (referring to its tendency to fight) and baggy (in reference to its "pants"), or be a reference to scraggly meaning scruffy or unkempt, or possibly craggy. Zuruggu, its Japanese name, comes from "zuru", which means crafty. It may also refer to zuruzuru, meaning loose, or the act or sound of dragging.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Zurrokex From zurren and Exuvia.
French Baggiguane From baggy and iguane.
Korean 곤율랭 Gonyullaeng Possibly from 건들건들 geondeulgeongeul, 건달 geondal and slang.
Chinese (Mandarin) 滑頭小子 / 滑头小子 Huátóuxiǎozi From 滑頭 huátóu and 小子 xiǎozi.
