April 1, 2016 was an April Fools' Day that fell on a Friday. In the Pokémon fandom, some websites pulled hoaxes on gullible fans.

Bulbagarden

  • The Bulbagarden Forums stated that Chespin would be Pikachu's successor as the mascot for the Pokémon franchise.[1]

Other fansites

  • On Reddit, subreddits /r/pokemon and /r/CFB switched themes for the day turning /r/Pokémon into a sub on College Football and /r/CFB into a Pokémon themed sub.
  • On Pokémon Showdown, a Digimon theme was adopted for the battle simulator. Similar to previous years, all sprites and models were replaced with various fan-drawn sprites, with the exception of sprites introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
