Spritzee (Japanese: シュシュプ Shushupu) is a Fairy-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

It evolves into Aromatisse when traded while holding a Sachet.

Biology

Spritzee is a pink, avian Pokémon. It has a rounded body and a pale blue-gray face. Most of its facial area is taken up by its curved beak, which somewhat resembles a plague doctor's mask. It has large red-orange eyes with long black lashes. On top of its head is a curly tuft of feathers or fur. It has small wings and purple feet with no visible digits.

Spritzee emits a scent that varies based on its diet and enraptures those around it using a scent pouch. In the past, royal ladies carried Spritzee with them instead of using perfume.

Major appearances

A Spritzee debuted in A Fashionable Battle!, under the ownership of Valerie. It was used in Valerie's Gym battle against Sawyer, where it battled Bagon and won. Spritzee reappeared in Fairy-Type Trickery!, where it was used in her Gym battle against Ash. It managed to beat Fletchinder but lost to Hawlucha. Spritzee reappeared again in Rocking Kalos Defenses! and Forming a More Perfect Union!, where it participated in the fight against the Giant Rock.

Minor appearances

Two Spritzee debuted in Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!, where Ash saw them flying through the air while stepping out of the airplane upon his arrival at Kalos. They appeared again in Till We Compete Again!, during a flashback.

A Spritzee appeared in A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!.

A Spritzee appeared in Clemont's Got a Secret!.

A Spritzee appeared in A PokéVision of Things to Come!.

Trivia

• Spritzee can be seen as a parallel to Swirlix. Both are Generation VI Fairy-type Pokémon that are version-exclusives of Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Sword and Shield, with Spritzee being exclusive to Y and Shield and Swirlix to X and Sword. Both have signature Abilities that affect themselves as well as their allies, and both evolve when traded holding a certain item.
• In Generation VIII, due to a coding error, Spritzee learns Draining Kiss twice, both at Level 9 and Level 15, while its evolution, Aromatisse learns the move only once at Level 15. It was meant to learn Disarming Voice at Level 9 instead.
• Spritzee was designed by Saya Tsuruta.

Origin

Spritzee seems to be based on a small bird, sharing some traits with hummingbirds and smaller types of owls. It also seems to be related to different kinds of cosmetics: its fluffy body may be based on powder puffs or other cosmetics applicators, while its shape seems to reference different aspects and parts of a perfume bottle.

Its perfumes, therapeutic aspects, and avian qualities may indicate that Spritzee and Aromatisse are based on plague doctors, who used various perfumes held in birdlike masks to drown out the scent of the deceased.

The fact that it evolves into its human-like evolution is possibly a reference to Gunnhild, a mythological Norwegian queen that shapeshifts into a bird.

Name origin

Spritzee may be a combination of spritz (a spray of liquid) and Fee (fairy in German and Dutch).

Shushupu may be from プシュー pushū (onomatopoeia for spraying).
