Ally Switch (Japanese: サイドチェンジ Side Change) is a non-damaging Psychic-type move introduced in Generation V. It was TM51 in Generation V and TR83 in Generation VIII.

Effect

Ally Switch causes the user to switch places with the ally opposite to itself, and is an increased-priority move. It will fail if the user is in the middle of the field in a Triple Battle, if the user has no ally opposite it, or if used in a Single Battle, Multi Battle, Rotation Battle, or Horde Encounter.

If a Pokémon targeted an ally with a move, but as a result of Ally Switch the Pokémon is now targeting itself when it would execute the move, the move will fail (even if the move is Acupressure).

Snipe Shot and the Abilities Stalwart and Propeller Tail ignore Ally Switch and hit the intended target.

Generation V-VI

Ally Switch's priority is +1.

Generation VII-VIII

Ally Switch has its priority increased to +2.

If powered up by a Psychium Z into Z-Ally Switch, the user's Speed stat rises by two stages.

Generation IX

Using Ally Switch consecutively now decreases the chance of success for each consecutive use. Ally Switch will fail when used successfully by another ally Pokémon on the same turn.

Ally Switch has the same effect as Baton Pass. The user switches positions with a teammate, and the switched ally receives a random stat boost. The user will switch with a teammate anywhere on the floor who is ordered first on the team list (or second on the list if the user is listed first).

Trivia

  • All Pokémon that can learn Ally Switch through TM in Generation V that have genders can learn it through breeding in Generations VI and VII.
  • In X and Y, Tyrogue is programmed to learn Ally Switch as an Egg Move, but there are no legitimate ways to pass the move, as it is male-only and none of its evolutions can learn Ally Switch by other means. Despite this, Tyrogue and its evolutions are unable to learn Ally Switch through Move Tutor in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon or TR in Sword and Shield.
