Lairon has a stocky, armored, quadruped build like Rhyhorn. Its body is a dark gray and its eyes are sky blue. Its back is covered with segments of iron armor, each with a high ridge and round dark holes on the sides. The sides of Lairon’s lower jaw have several flat protrusions and two teeth are visible in its mouth. There are two pronged metal bands on Lairon's legs. The upper is gray, and the lower is iron-colored.
Lairon feeds on iron contained in rocks and water, and drinks mineral spring water until it is bloated, as it has been said doing so tempers its steel body. Lairon makes its nests near such mineral springs, on mountains where iron ore is buried. Do to its nesting preferences, this may cause it to clash with humans attempting to mine the ore.
Lairon are also known to show off their strength when they bash into rocks, with the sparks being released seemingly showing their strength. When two Lairon meet each other, they may fight for territory by bashing into each other.
Lairon also appeared in A Pyramiding Rage! under the ownership of Paul. It battled against Brandon's Regice, and after being hit and frozen by Regice's Ice Beam and being hit again by the latter's Zap Cannon, it was defeated quickly.
Lairon tempers its steel body by drinking highly nutritious mineral springwater until it is bloated. This Pokémon makes its nest close to springs of delicious water.

When two Lairon meet in the wild, they fight for territory by bashing into each other with their steel bodies. The sound of their collision carries for miles.

In Generation III, Lairon is the only, non-bug type Pokémon, along with Magikarp to learn only one move during the time it evolves from it's pre-evolution, and evolves again. this move is Protect which it learns at level 37
Origin
Lairon has an appearance similar to that of Placerias, a mammal-like reptile that lived in the Triassic period. It could also have been based on a metallic Rhyhorn.
Name origin
Lairon's name may be a combination of lairy, slang for aggressive, or lair, and iron.
Kodora may be a combination of 巨 ko, large, and dragon.
