Reacting Faster

In battle Giovanni kicks his Pokéballs, much like Crystal, in order to be able to react faster.
Should this be: in order to make his Pokémon react faster?
- Jshadias 13:30, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I'm almost positive it's referring to Giovanni's own reaction time, although the reverse could simultaneously be true. --ANinyMouse 20:42, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Think his name comes from Don Giovanni? Giovanni could be called a Don, though a different kind of one, and we already have another eighth Gym Leader as being named after him. -Happy Mask Man 00:13, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

How could Kicking Pokéballs make HIM react faster?. I mean he sits in a chair in the shadows. First, if there in his pockets or on a belt, how COULD he kick them. If they were in front of him, Persian could knock them into battle. Or they would roll. Second. How could kicking his Pokéballs make his Pokémon react faster? Even if he shot a slowpoke's pokéball out of a bazooka, that has nothing to do with Pokémon's reation time.--Machamp ion 15:49, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Machamp_ion raises an interesting point here. I'd say he does it just for style. --Kyoufu Kawa 16:28, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

I put my _ in your post, but anyway, Yeah him or his pokemon, no difference in reaction times here I tested it my self with life size Pokéball toys and a buddy. No difference except the balls rolled into battle and would returned the pokémon in battle.--Machamp ion 16:39, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Uh, no comment on the wording of the line, but you're totally confusing him with his anime counterpart. The manga incarnation of him does not "sit on a chair in the shadows" and isn't even known to have a Persian. Capsule Computer 01:44, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Forget me if I am wrong but due to the fact that the Special is considered to be what Satoshi Tajiri wanted the game world to be like and the fact that Nintendo approves of every thing that happens in it and the anime wouldn't Silver being Giovanni's son has been confirmed by the Big N. Bobtherandomguy 17:00, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, we wouldn't argue that in the games Lance is evil, would we? We wouldn't argue that in the games the RB hero is called Ash instead of Red, would we? There are many common story elements among the manga, anime, and games, but there are many distinct differences that keep them from being synonymous media. IIMarckus 01:07, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Tajiri actually said it is the most accurate portrayl of the world he imagined, he did not say it WAS the world he imagined. And Giovanni doesn't kick his Poke Balls for anyone's reaction time. The reason he in fact does this is to get the Pokemon out quicker. He counts how long in seconds it will take him to do everything, so he tries to shave off as many seconds as possible in any way he can, not so he or his Pokemon can react faster. Also, Machamp ion's point doesn't really make sense, he's thinking of the anime's portrayl of Giovanni, I don't recall Giovanni once sitting in a chair in the Special, nor does he have a Persian. The author of that sentence is referring to the Special manga, judging by the mention of Crystal, who does in fact kick her balls in Special.

Red in relation to hair?

What was the debate? --Dual 18:58, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

A very good question, I've always wondered that... I mean, what else COULD it mean but that his kid's hair is red? TTEchidnaFire echyGSDS! 06:43, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I believe the debate was over what exactly qualifies as "red hair." After that clue was revealed there was a lot of speculation, reaching as far as Blue (Because the FRLG art of blue has that orange/brown kinda hair.) and Misty, there was even minor speculation that Jessie could be the kid (this was short lived seeing as she is an Anime only character, Pokémon Yellow being the exception.) So from that branched the debate of what "red hair" is exactly. Trainer-c 07:28, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Deoxys

Didn't Giovanni release Deoxys at the end of FR/LG arc? --Maxim 09:18, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

No, Giovanni died so Deoxys was released. I've read Volume 27. And, after Deoxys ran off, this other TR girl came along and tried to turn it into stone and--You know the rest. Posted by the Θρtιmαtum♏Talk|Links10:23 23 May 2008

Why does...

Why does Giovanni want Pikachu in the Anime? :\ I've never understood why, it's not like Ash's Pikachu is a shiny, or has some super-powerful-move or something (unless Pikachu is secretly some super powerful android Pokémon or a super powerful Clone like Mewtwo...). So yeah...Why does he want Pikachu so bad? Takoto! 18:12, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

He doesn't. Team Rocket wants Pikachu to give to "the boss" as a gift after seeing its power in EP002. PL12 19:03, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh. Sorry ^^; It's been ages since i watched the first few episodes, i guess i forgot. Takoto! 19:19, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

It DOES know Volt Tackle, which is a "super-powerful-move" for a Pikachu.--Ozzie 19:27, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
True, but they started after Pikachu after they saw it's powerful Thunderbolt. PL12 19:29, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Uhh, yeah, but Pikachu didn't know Volt Tackle until later on in the Anime |: I know for a fact it didn't use it in any of the episodes before they met May + Max... So yeah. Takoto! 19:37, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Do you think it could be funny if Jessie, James, and Meowth finally brought Pikachu to the boss but Giovanni rejected him, so Team Rocket wasted the whole anime going after a worthless common rat for nothing? SeanWheeler 23:48, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

That's probably what would happen; Pikachu isn't a very good Pokémon. Frankjohnson123 22:31, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Giovanni's kid

(Though it was most likely referring to red, considering how the pronoun "him" was used in the Japanese version with apparantly both Red and Leaf)

I deleted the previous line for two reasons: the "him" wasn't actually in the Japanese (the translation of it adds it so the wording makes more sense -- see [1]), and in the English language "him" does not necessary imply the subject is male. In any case, what do you mean by "most likely referring to Red"? That Red was actually Gio's son, or that Gideon was meant to only talk to Red? IIMarckus 23:03, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

The red refers to his kid's hair, not his kid's name. Red has brown hair, remember? TTEchidna 23:29, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
The Gideon quote refers to hair, yes. I'm talking about in the removed line by Weedle Mchairybug, who added it in -- I can't make sense of it, and it doesn't seem to me to be talking about hair color. IIMarckus 23:41, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
How the hell could he be talking about Red the character when he's the kid standing right infront of him? (If you choose the male). The player IS Red! --ケンジガール 02:16, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I think I can translate (apologies to Mr. Mchairybug if I get it wrong). He's trying to say that "This text was likely meant to be said to Red, rather than Leaf, because of the presence of a male pronoun in the Japanese version." It's not clear whether he's trying to say the writers wrote this only for Red because of their mistake, or Gideon's, or what. Although as IIMarckus pointed out, the pronoun was changed to masculine to awkward wording in the translation (I don't know Japanese, but I'm assuming it's because it would have been roughly equivalent to "it," which can be kind of demeaning). --Martonimos((Talk)) 04:33, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm taking a Japanese class. All I know is that when any gender pronouns are used, the user is talking about themselves. There is really no such thing as "he" or "she" in a conversation. At least, not that I've learned yet. --ケンジガール 05:37, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, Martonimos. Also, I was meaning the translation (the way it was translated made it seem as though Gideon was talking to Red due to his using the Male pronoun (If he had used a different gender pronoun depending on the Gender, I wouldn't have been in this rut.)

Pokémon Live

Here's an excerpt from the synopsis at TRsRockin:
Delia tells Professor Oak about her less-than-perfect life in the past and her acquaintance with Giovanni. When she was a teenager, she used to hang out with a crowd of bad kids. One of her friends back then was starting up a gang that later became Team Rocket. She straightened her life out once she met Ash's father, and became the upstanding woman she is now.
So Giovanni is not Ash's father in that canon. --FabuVinny |Talk Page| 15:56, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Pokemon in LGFR

Are we sure he has two Rhyhorn and no Rhydon in LGFR? I don't know, having not played the games in a while. It just seems odd to me, given that he has a Rhyhorn and a Rhydon in RB and most LGFR Leaders seem to follow their RB teams and also, that his final Pokemon should not be evolved. Just seemed strange to me.

I'm pretty sure it was two Rhyhorn, although that does still seem strange --HAH08 19:01, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Appearances

I don't know about this, but should Giovanni be listed in the episode appearances for Meowth's fantasies? Jmath 19:35, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

It's already in the "Anime" section. R.A. Hunter B. 22:17, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Can somebody please fix the page? I don't know what would be messing it up, and don't want to kill the thing. R.A. Hunter B. 21:38, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Fixed. Someone forgot to close their div tags, but I have replaced them with a br instead. Tis safer. — THE TROM — 22:15, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I thought it would've been worked out when it happened a few days ago, but nobody did anything. And I'm not smart enough to do that on my own anyways. R.A. Hunter B. 22:21, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Roster

What Pokemon does Giovanni use in HeartGold and SoulSilver? Chomper4 21:02, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Serebii's working on cracking that right now. I think some of the others are looking for it too. Aura-Knight 22:38, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Giovanni in HG and SS

which role will he plays in this games? --TheRock4life 21:08, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

And what does he own in it? Chomper4 21:26, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
According to serebii.net, he is in some role involving Celebi time travelling with you and your opposite player character. He makes references to Red and you do get to battle him. Solar Dragon 21:54, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, Celebi warps you and Kotone/Hibiki back in time, you witness Giovanni abandoning Silver, then are warped to a cave in the present and fight him. Reign 00:20, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Ekans and Koffing

How do we know Giovanni actually gave them to Jessie and James? It could've been their parents or friends, besides they didn't even state who gave them Kofing and Ekans.--ForceFire 09:27, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Yeah. Ugoz 05:27, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Master ball?

Look very good at this picture.

He's holding a Master ball? --Gabo 2oo 22:08, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Just checked the colors on MS Paint, and yes, that is purple. R.A. Hunter Blade 22:14, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Would this be trivia-worthy? He was infiltrating Silph in order to obtain the Master Ball, yet he seems to already have one. Seems contradictory to me.--JacobCrystal 00:38, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
He could've grabbed one before the player challenges him. - unsigned comment from Missingno. Master (talkcontribs) 11:36, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

But didn't you battle him before in the Rocket Hideout in the basement of Rocket game corner in Celadon City? He keeps the same sprite throughout the game, so he seems to already have the Master Ball. SeanWheeler 23:34, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Might just mean that he managed to grab one and they're just going there to get more. I dunno, I'm guessing here. - unsigned comment from Missingno. Master (talkcontribs) 00:09, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Palette. The R on his jacket is also purple. TTEchidna 03:44, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

So maybe it's just a normal poké ball in the shadows? SeanWheeler 14:30, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

That's possible, but it looks more like a normal Poké Ball that is purple as the real Master Ball has two pink circles (SugimoriMasterBall.png). Isn't there a purple Poké Ball in the intro of "The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon" (there is a picture close to the bottom of the page, can't post here for sizing reasons)? --Nathan2055talk 19:49, 4 February 2011 (UTC) - fixed code Nathan2055talk 19:59, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Titles

You say that Giovanni is the only one to have two titles, being "Boss" and "Gym Leader". What about "Gym Leader" "Lieutenant" Surge? --Aescula 10:32, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

I think that in this case "Lt. Surge" is considered to be the character's name as one phrase. The important part about Giovanni's titles is that he uses them at two separate stages of the same game(s). —darklordtrom 10:35, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
What about Rival Blue and Champion Blue? --AndyPKMN 12:40, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Different games, that's why Wallace and Koga are excluded too.--Kaoz 02:46, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
What are you talking about? Blue is the rival and the Champion in the same games. CuboneKing 02:51, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, my brain superimposed the word "leader" over "rival". Anyway, we could specify that Giovanni is the only one to have another title in the same games he's a Gym Leader.--Kaoz 12:48, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Giovanni's Cloyster

In the Pokemon Adventures manga, Chapter 24, Red meets Giovanni in the diglet's cave. At the end in that chapter, Giovanni uses his cloyster to defeat 2 magmar. So his Cloyster isn't only seen in the Team Rocket HQ. ~Rsandee

Where exactly are you talking about? It doesn't say that in the Adventures section. It even mentions that he uses it do destroy the two Magmar. Also, please sign you comments with 4 tildes (~~~~). Werdnae (talk) 20:01, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Page is getting too big

On the edit page, it says that the official page is over 32kb and it should be broken into smaller sections. PattyMan 23:08, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

He's right..my IE just went into compatibility mode the moment I clicked...maybe we should split his anime section (and probably his adventures section..he's a pretty big character in there) Ataro 23:23, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
The sections that are split should be renamed 'Giovanni (anime)' and 'Giovanni (Adventures)'. One of us should do this. PattyMan 01:15, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Hold your horses just a bit. There needs to be some proper discussion on the matter first, not just two people agreeing, as was the case for Misty and Brock. For reference, this page is currently as big as Misty's was when it was split (in terms of bytes); roughly 51kB. Werdnae (talk) 01:23, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
What happened when they got split? Also, put up the template on it's page that has the split thing (if there won't be any edit wars). PattyMan 01:33, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
There was a discussion on the Bulbawiki Forum. Ideally though, talk page should be used too. Werdnae (talk) 02:01, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Okay, so here are the main arguments I can see for splitting those sections off. Adventures: Major antagonist of the RGB chapter, helps Yellow out against Lance in the Yellow chapter, Major protagonist again in the FRLG chapter. Anime: Major antagonist of Mewtwo Returns and has regular cameo appearances (not including the boss fantasies). For arguments against, it basically comes down to whether his roles in the different media are separate enough for individual pages. Please discuss. Werdnae (talk) 11:04, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
I support the split. I actually got the "page is too long" error back when I tried to edit in his English HGSS trainer class earlier this year, and given that he has now become a major antagonist in the anime again, I'd say there's plenty to split. --The Great Butler 02:02, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
I also support it. If there is too much to be told about him, then why not split? --Netto-kun Talk 22:13, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

I have already said "Liberum Veto". In Old Polish legislature, when someone shouted this during session, the postulate was automatically rejected and the matter couldn't be discussed anymore. --Maxim 15:08, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
That has nothing to do with this >_> Ataro 15:24, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
I also agree that it should be split. The page seems to be stretching out a bit. --Lordrogersmith6485 03:34, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
I support this as well. He is a major player in Adventures, and his role in the anime is really quite different, considering that the places and ways in which he has direct involvement are very unlike the games, as is most of his indirect involvement. --LaprasBoi 19:36, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
I support this! bring out the mead! (<--- Idk) but yea Giovanni's been a major antagonist for a long time, then he died down, now he's coming back to being a major antagonist again. It seems like he should've had different articles long ago. so I say separate them and do your stuff people. In A Manica 15:01, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Error

In the Trivia section of this page, it says Giovanni is the only Kanto gym leader to not appear in every generation Kanto appeared in. I've never played a Generation 1 game, but on the Janine page there is no mention that she appeared in generation 1, and she was a Kanto gym leader. Does anybody know if that statement about Giovanni is true? --Jelloratbob 20:59, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

New comments to the bottom please. You're right, whoever added it forgot about Janine. I've removed the trivia point. Werdnae (talk) 01:39, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Anime

Just wondering, shouldn't Giovanni have his own page for his anime counterpart (especially since he's starting to appear more again in the Best Wishes series) (Matty19892009 20:22, 31 December 2010 (UTC))

I agree he should. He's appeared countless times throughout the series, so he should get his own article. Especially if Best Wishes is bringing back his appearances. In A Manica 14:16, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Ok I'm getting to confuzzled trying to post here and in the other area, so I'm just gonna post here. That's your opinion Maxim, but Giovanni is becoming a major antagonist again. Why shouldn't he have his own article. More specifically, why do you think he shouldn't? In A Manica 15:05, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Because it's still the same character. --Maxim 18:01, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
The main reason why the move was suggested is because this page is HUGE and is straining the server Diamond Lanturn CodeName: 05308 18:03, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Please stop making assumptions everyone. While huge pages aren't a large strain on the server, they are a problem for those with slower internet connections, and certain browser/OS combinations. As a result, some of them have requested that it be split. However for it to be split, it would have to be decided that the resultant articles would all be a) Notable in their own right and b) sufficiently different. Most of the admins I've spoken to believe that it currently fails those tests. If any section was split off, it would probably be the adventures section first - he has a greater role there than in the anime. Werdnae (talk) 01:38, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Well I personally disagree with the idea that the anime article wouldn't be notable in its own right, but unfortunately I'm not an admin so I can't do anything but say "Whatever". So.... whatever. In A Manica 07:23, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I agree to have the anime section have it's own page. That way the page would be able to talk more Team Rocket sort than just being a ground type Gym leader. --KayKay|Chat to me! 00:21, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
But he is a Team Rocket leader in the games too. --Maxim 20:03, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Now that I'm looking at the page, it's very long. I would not only suggest moving the anime section, but also the manga section. --Nathan2055talk 16:53, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

I also agree that the manga section can be split off especially since he has played an important role in three different chapters. -Tyler53841 05:42, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Same VA?

I don't know if anyone was paying much attention to the English dub of the Best Wishes series, but Giovanni's voice really sounds different from when he was last in the anime. It's sort of an off-English accent. –MasterKenobi 18:13, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
