Dodrio are bird-like Pokémon with three heads, and a ‘V’-shaped black crest on each one. They have very small wings hidden under the fluffy brown feathers that cover their black underside. Because their wings are so small, they have little flying ability, but can jump incredibly high. Dodrio's long legs allow it to deal devastating kicks, but only frontward. However, to protect its back, one of the necks can turn around and fiercely peck the opponent with its long, thin beak. Dodrio also have three pink tail feathers.
Gender differences
A female Dodrio has brown necks, while a male has black ones.
Special abilities
Dodrio have long legs which allow it to jump incredibly high, which makes up for its lack of flight. These legs also allow it to run incredibly fast and for long distances without rest, as well as to deal massively powerful kicks to its opponents. Dodrio communicates with its other heads by mental telepathy, although not having any special psychic abilities. Another feature that contributes to its running ability are its three sets of hearts and lungs, which enable it to run long distances without rest. It can deliver devastating blows with its sharp beaks.
Behavior
Dodrio love to wake up early and call their cries every morning, and also love to run. They are usually very crotchety, arguing with themselves on a constant basis. However, if one if them gets to eat, the others will be satisfied, too, and stop squabbling. A Dodrio is especially wary if all three of its heads are looking in different directions.
Dodrio can be found living in deserts and plains. Dodrio are native to Kanto, but they can be found on rare occasions in Sinnoh and Unova. They have also been imported to the Johto and Hoenn Safari Zones.
Dodrio first appeared in Pokémon - I Choose You!, where it has a brief appearance, while shouting its cry to the rising sun like a rooster, notably as the first Pokémon seen in real life in the anime (all Pokémon that had appeared beforehand in the episode were either on TV, in dreams, or not real).
Dodrio also made a cameo in A Chansey Operation. This Dodrio had its necks tied in a knot.
Dodrio, a Triple Bird Pokémon. Its three heads represent joy, sorrow, and anger.
In the manga
In the Magical Pokémon Journey manga
A Dodrio appears in the tenth chapter, Panic at the Cherry Blossom Festival. In this chapter, a Dodrio gets drunk on amazake and causes havoc during a cherry blossom festival which Hazel and her friends attend.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Yellow's Doduo evolved into Dodrio in Volume 7 in the epic battle against Lance. It was seen again in Volume 12, managing to save Pika and Chuchu from a surfing accident. It continues to be her main method of transportation to this day using its quick speed.
Watch out if Dodrio's three heads are looking in three separate directions. It's a sure sign that it is on its guard. Don't go near this Pokémon if it's being wary - it may decide to peck you.
Apparently, the heads aren't the only parts of the body that Dodrio has three of. It has three sets of hearts and lungs as well, so it is capable of running long distances without rest.
While one of its heads is saying something in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, the others say me too or mine too, but its pre-evolved form's other head won't.
Before Generation IV, the normal necks of Dodrio is the color of the female's (brown), while its pre-evolution's is based on the male's (black).
Dodrio's National Dex number is the whole number portion of its weight in kilograms. As of Generation V, this is a unique characteristic. However, Slowpoke and Scyther share the distinction when considering their respective weights in pounds.
Though Dodrio is based on a flightless bird, it is able to learn Fly.
Before Generation V, Dodrio learns Steel Wing via TM, despite not appearing to have wings.
Dodrio was the first Pokémon to appear in the flesh in the anime (all others before that were either dreamt of by Ash, or else shown on the TV in his room).
It is stated in the Pokédex that Doduo can run at 60 mph, while Dodrio's states it can only run at nearly 40 mph. However, its base Speed stat is higher than Doduo's.
Origin
Despite its name, Dodrio seems like it has more in common with ostriches than dodos. It also seems to show some similarity to the Moa, an extinct flightless bird, and the Emu, another flightless bird. It also resembles the Kiwi in some ways as well. Its crests may mean it may have been based on cassowaries.
Name origin
Dodrio's name seems to be a combination of dodo, an extinct, flightless bird, and trio, meaning a group of three. The dori in its Japanese name may come from 鳥 tori, bird, or it may be a combination of ドードー dodo and トリオ trio because of its three heads.
