Whitney (Japanese: アカネ Akane) is the Gym Leader of Goldenrod City's Gym, known officially as the Goldenrod Gym. She hands out the Plain Badge to Trainers who defeat her. She is a young woman who uses Template:Type2 Pokémon.

In the games

Whitney appears in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver as the Leader of the Goldenrod Gym. She is the third Gym Leader that Trainers must defeat to move further in the game. She is known as "The Incredibly Pretty Girl!".

Whitney uses the Template:Type2, and although she only began battling a little while ago, her talent attracted the Pokémon League to choose her as a Gym Leader. Her gym is filled with other young girls like herself, who use cute Normal-type Pokémon like Meowth, and is shaped like a Clefairy—a Pokémon she uses in every game she appears in. While in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal all challengers have to do to reach Whitney is navigate through the Gym's maze puzzle, Whitney is initially absent from the Gym in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. She can be found in Goldenrod's Radio Tower attempting to win a Radio Card. If the player helps her, she will return to the Gym. Despite this act of kindness, she will throw a temper tantrum upon defeat and refuse to give the Plain Badge. A Gym Trainer will tell the player that she will eventually calm down. Once calmed down, however, she will give not only the badge, but TM45 (Attract) as well. Apparently, this move is perfect for a cutie like her, because it makes full use of a Pokémon's cuteness.

Like the other Johto and Kanto Gym Leaders, Whitney will leave her Gym from time to time in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Unlike other Leaders, she will not travel far: just down the road to the Goldenrod Department Store anyday between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. She's to the far left of the 6th floor. Once her Pokégear phone number has been obtained, she will accept rematches on Saturday afternoons at the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City. Her team in these battles will be significantly stronger than her team in the initial battles, although her signature Miltank will remain in her party.

Whitney also makes an appearance in Pokémon Stadium 2's Johto Gym Leader Castle. This is the only game in which she appears and uses Pokémon of a type other than Normal (she does use a Nidorina in her anime appearance, however).

In the anime

Whitney appeared in the episodes A Goldenrod Opportunity and A Dairy Tale Ending.

Whitney is a sweet but ditzy young lady. She easily gets lost in her own home town.

Ash challenged her to a Gym match, but was unable to stop her Miltank, who constantly used Rollout to deflect attacks.

File:WhitneyMortyFlashback.png

After his defeat, Whitney invited Ash to her Uncle Milton's dairy farm, where many Miltank were raised to produce milk for consumption.

Ash, Brock, and Misty spent the day taking care of the dairy's many Miltank.

After Ash stopped a barrel-shaped robot piloted by Team Rocket, he came up with a strategy to defeat Miltank. He used Totodile and Cyndaquil to slow it down, then had Pikachu knock it out. With that, Ash won the Plain Badge.

She makes a small cameo along with Morty in Bagged Then Tagged! when it was revealed that Lyra's next Gym challenge was supposed to be either one of them.

Pikachu was then used to Thunderbolt Miltank, but was ineffective. Pikachu was defeated by the second Rollout.

It appeared again in the next episode, sending Team Rocket flying. Then, in a friendly battle before Ash can challenge Whitney once again, it manages to defeat Ash's Cyndaquil and Totodile, but is defeated by Ash's Pikachu, earning Ash the Plain Badge.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Whitney in Pokémon Adventures

Whitney is an actress. She is also good friends with DJ Mary. She is portrayed as a slightly more arrogant and temperamental person than from other appearances.

She met Gold while performing at the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City. The two clashed and ended up competing against each other in a bike race. Whitney was initially in the lead, until she was blocked off by a large tree. The tree turned out to be a Sudowoodo hiding from a Rhydon. Whitney was then kidnapped by the Rhydon as she tried to flee and broke her arm. Gold caught Sudowoodo and defeated the Rhydon. In the Chuang Yi version of the manga, she is mistakenly translated as the Gym Leader of Cherrygrove City, rather than Goldenrod.

Whitney isn't a strong Gym Leader, according to Suicune. Whitney is the only Johto Gym Leader, besides Pryce, that Suicune didn't challenge for a right to be its partner in the fight against the Masked Man. Misty also easily defeated her in the opening ceremony of the Pokémon League.

Mil Mil
Mil Mil
Main article: Whitney's Miltank

Mil Mil is Whitney's main Pokémon. She was first seen in the bike race, where her having it use Tackle on Gold caused her to be in the lead.* The race was halted when a Sudowoodo and a Rhydon were blocking the way. Mil Mil tried to defeat the Rhydon but got defeated, and Whitney had her arm broken after it kidnapped her. Gold catches the Sudowoodo and takes down the Rhydon himself. Mil Mil reappeared when she was battling Suicune, or rather an animated statue imitation. She was no match for it despite being Whitney's strongest Pokémon, although with Pryce's tips they succeeded in pinning it down. She was used in a battle against Misty in the tournament in which Mil Mil was defeated easily by the latter's Starmie.

Smea-Smea
Whitney's Smea-Smea

Smea-Smea, a Smeargle, was a Pokémon that belonged to Whitney. She gave it to her good friend DJ Mary prior to Gold's arrival. It was known for bothering him all the time by splattering paint over his face when they first met, which angered him. Gold and his Pokémon chased after the Smeargle with his Pokémon but it was too fast for them. He chased it all the way to Goldenrod's Radio Tower where he found out that it belonged to Whitney and DJ Mary. Smea-Smea appeared again along with Mary while Whitney was battling Suicune. It did not do much, but was able to provide a counter against its ice reflection tactic by leaving a smudge on its face.

Smea-Smea was also seen mimicking Entei's Flamethrower attack via Sketch, which as it turns out allowed it to copy its inherent attributes as well (meaning that while other Fire-type attacks wouldn't melt the Masked Man's ice soldiers, Smeargle's flames would).

Smea-Smea was later seen returned to Whitney's possession in the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc where Whitney used it to smear paint on Gold's face after he shoved a RageCandyBar down her throat.

Smea-Smea's only known move is Sketch.

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga

In Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys, Gold loses to Whitney in a Gym Battle and she takes away his Pikachu. She begins traveling with him and follows him on his journey until he defeats her later. Whitney loves cute Pokémon and is very encouraging of Gold as he progresses through his journey.
