Pumpkaboo made its first appearance in The Bamboozling Forest!. While walking through a forest, Jessie tripped over Pumpkaboo as it was emerging from underground. While it kept shining its light repeatedly, Jessie threw a Poké Ball at it, successfully catching Pumpkaboo, much to James's surprise. Later, it was used to battle Ash and his friends to prevent them from rescuing a Pangoro and Pancham that Team Rocket had captured. Using its Leech Seed, Pumpkaboo was able to prevent its opponents' Pokémon from moving. It was defeated after Ash gave Pangoro a leaf, allowing it to regain its confidence and easily send Team Rocket blasting off.
Since being caught Pumpkaboo has become Jessie's main battler in Kalos, replacing Wobbuffet. As is traditional for Pokémon owned by Team Rocket, Pumpkaboo has lost nearly every battle it has participated in.
Personality and characteristics
Not much is known about Pumpkaboo's personality. It is shown to have a tendency to flash its lights repeatedly. Pumpkaboo has no problem listening to its new Trainer.
Pumpkaboo was shown to be roughly twice James's Inkay's size. This would make Jessie's Pumpkaboo Super Size: Inkay are 1' 04", and Super Size Pumpkaboo are 2' 07".
