Aftermath (Japanese: ゆうばく Induced Explosion) is an Ability introduced in Generation IV.

Effect

In battle

When a Pokémon with this Ability faints due to damage from a move that makes contact, the attacking Pokémon takes damage equal to ¼ of its own maximum HP. This Ability will not activate if a Pokémon with Damp is on the field.

Outside of battle

Aftermath has no effect outside of battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, when the Pokémon faints, it sometimes causes an explosion similar to Selfdestruct, reducing HP by half on team members and by 40 on hostile Pokémon, as well as destroying items. In Super Mystery Dungeon, Aftermath has a chance of activating in proportion of lost HP should the Pokémon be hit by an adjacent enemy.

Trivia

  • All Pokémon that are able to have this Ability can learn Explosion. Aftermath's similarity to Explosion is more apparent in languages other than English, including the original Japanese, in which the Ability is known as ゆうばく Yūbaku (Induced Explosion). This is also why the Ability Damp affects Aftermath.
  • Prior to becoming an Ability, Aftermath appeared as a TCG Attack.
