Wynaut is a small, cyan-colored Pokémon with an hourglass-shaped body. Wynaut has a black tail with an eye-spot on it. It has a pair of flipper-like appendages on the sides of its head. There is a round, bulbous growth on Wynaut's forehead.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Wynaut's main means of self-defense is to repel attacks at its foes. However, Wynaut doesn't excel at this as much as its evolved form, Wobbuffet.
Behavior
Wynaut always has a smile on its face. As such, it will use its tail to communicate its feelings. A Wynaut that's slapping the ground with its tail means that it's upset. During moonlit nights, Wynaut gather into groups and squeeze against each other. This activity is used for strengthening up the Wynauts' endurance.
Wynaut is only found on Mirage Island, where it is the sole species. It is unknown why Wynaut only appear there. Mirage Island is also the only place the Liechi Berry is found naturally. This leads to the theory that they need to feed on the Liechi Berry to survive in the wild.
In Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut?, a plan of Team Rocket's backfires and sends everyone to Mirage Island. The only inhabitants of this island are none other than Wynaut, though it wasn't seen by any of the human characters other than May and Drew.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Wobbuffet and Wynaut send the player on a mission into the Uproar Forest. As thanks for completing it, they help to remodel the rescue base. Wynaut also makes an appearance discussing the identity of the strongest Pokémon with Lombre and Bellsprout in the cutscene that unlocks the Western Cave.
Pokédex entries
This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation III.
Wynaut can always be seen with a big, happy smile on its face. Look at its tail to determine if it is angry. When angered, this Pokémon will be slapping the ground with its tail.
Wynaut gather on moonlit nights to play by squeezing up against each other. By being squeezed, this Pokémon gains endurance and is trained to dole out powerful counterattacks.
Wynaut is the baby Pokémon that evolves by level the earliest, at 15, while most other baby Pokémon that evolve by level all evolve at level 30.
In Generation III, Wynaut is the only baby Pokémon found in the wild in the games, on Mirage Island. Ironically, in Generation IV, Wynaut is one of the only baby Pokémon that can't be found in the wild.
Wynaut is the one of the two non-legendary Pokémon to be considered "uber" in the metagame due to its ability and non-offensive movesets. A Mirror Match or a Wynaut Vs. Wobbuffet in a 1-on-1 battle can instantly lock the game for more than 70 turns or permanently if both Pokémon are equipped with Leftovers (though in Generation IV, if two Pokémon with Shadow Tag face each other in battle, both may switch out).
Origin
Name origin
Wynaut's name is pronounced identically to phrase "why not?" Its Japanese name is almost homophonous with the phrase そうなの sō na no, which means "really?". Its French name seems to be based on a repetition of "Okay". Its German name may be a corruption of "It's so".
Its name, when paired with the Japanese name of its evolution, Wobbuffet, ソーナンス Sonans, makes for a potential perpetual conversation of "really?" followed by "that's the way it is," and so on, as seen in Camp Pikachu.
