The ninth generation^[1] (Japanese: 第九世代 ninth generation) of Pokémon games, commonly referred to by fans as Generation IX (Japanese: 世代ＩＸ Generation IX), is the ninth installment of the Pokémon video game series. The ninth generation began with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on November 18, 2022 and continued with The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, followed by Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Generation IX was first revealed via a Pokémon Presents video presentation on February 27, 2022, which revealed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

History

The ninth generation of Pokémon was announced with the reveal of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on February 27, 2022. These games were released worldwide on November 18, 2022.

Since May 30, 2023, players have been able to store their Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet and trade with other players in Pokémon HOME.

During the Pokémon Presents on February 27, 2023, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero was announced. It is a paid DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, introducing new content to the games. Its first part, The Teal Mask, was released on September 13, 2023, while its second part, The Indigo Disk, was released on December 14, 2023. Physical bundles of each game with its DLC were announced on September 26, 2023 and were released on November 3, 2023.

During the Pokémon Presents on February 27, 2024, Pokémon Legends: Z-A was announced. The game is set within Lumiose City in the Kalos region. It is is scheduled to release in 2025.

Connectivity

Regarding connectivity with previous generations, users of Pokémon HOME can carry forward their Pokémon from Pokémon Bank (if they downloaded it prior to the discontinuation of the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS), Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee!, Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Legends Arceus and GO to the application, allowing for a transfer of Pokémon that originate in core series games as early as Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, as well as the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console releases of the Generation I and II games.

Advances in gameplay

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are open-world games in which areas are seamlessly connected. The areas in the game can be visited in any order.^[2]
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet feature multiplayer with up to four players simultaneously via the Union Circle, enabling trading and battling between players as well as allowing them to travel through the game's areas and hold picnics together.^[2]
The addition of 103 new Pokémon, bringing the total to 1008.
The addition of 48 new moves, bringing the total to 913.
The addition of 31 new Abilities, bringing the total to 298.
A new region to explore, the Paldea region, based on the Iberian Peninsula.
A new villainous team, Team Star.
The introduction of the regional forms for Tauros and Wooper.
The introduction of the ecologically similar Pokémon, with four new Pokémon sharing resemblances to the evolutionary lines of both Diglett and Tentacool.
A new battle mechanic, Terastallization, which encases the Pokémon in crystals and enhances or alters their battle attributes through their Tera Type.

Alterations from Generation VIII

Doors now open automatically again.
Random encounters in tall grass, caves, or water have been completely removed.
Hail has been replaced with a new weather condition, snow.
Single-use held items now replenish after battle (with the exception of Berries).
NPC Trainer must now be interacted manually in order to initiate an in-game Trainer battle.
Running from in-game Trainer battles is now possible, but doing this will cause the player to black out immediately.
The following items have been removed:
- Repellent items.
- The Escape Rope.
- Fishing Rods.
- Incenses.
  - Consequently, the requirement for one of the parents to hold an incense to breed certain baby Pokémon has been lifted, and breeding their evolved forms will always result in that Pokémon's baby form.
The Spanish language option is now labeled as "Español (España)", and the language label for foreign Spanish-language Pokémon is changed to reflect this (e.g. from "SPA" to "SP-EU" in the English version).

The Elite Four returns, replacing the Champion Cup.
The Champion tournament is replaced by the Academy Ace Tournament.
Pokémon Camp is replaced by picnics.
- As breeding is now done via picnics, the Pokémon Nursery is also removed.
- Curry is replaced by Sandwiches.
The Y-Comm and Victory Station are replaced by the Poké Portal.
Max Raid Battles are replaced by Tera Raid Battles.
League Cards are replaced by profiles.
Battle Points and Watts are replaced by League Points.
2 Pokémon received new abilities.
11 Pokémon had their ability changed.
Badges are no longer required to catch Pokémon of a certain level.
Crabrawler now evolves into Crabominable when exposed to an Ice Stone.
Like in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, items sell for a quarter of their purchase price instead of a half.
Moveset can now be altered manually before being transferred into a new game.

The Teal Mask (Version 2.0.1)

A new area to explore, the land of Kitakami, based on the Tōhoku.
The addition of seven new Pokémon (Dipplin, Poltchageist, Sinistcha, Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti, and Ogerpon), bringing the total to 1017.
- Four forms of Ogerpon: Teal Mask, Wellspring Mask, Hearthflame Mask, and Cornerstone Mask are added to expansion. Each is introduced with a unique Terastallized form.
- The introduction of ecologically similar Pokémon similar to Sinistea and Polteageist.
- The introduction of Bloodmoon Ursaluna, a new form of Ursaluna.
The addition of four new moves (Syrup Bomb, Ivy Cudgel, Matcha Gotcha, and Blood Moon), bringing the total to 919.
The addition of five new Abilities (Supersweet Syrup, Hospitality, Mind's Eye, Toxic Chain, and Embody Aspect), bringing the total to 303.
Adds the Roto-Stick for more options when taking pictures.
The return of:
- 102 previously unavailable Pokémon, bringing the overall total to 587.
  - Four returning Pokémon had their Abilities changed: Wind Rider replaced Early Bird as one of Shiftry's standard Abilities, and the Piplup family gained Competitive as their Hidden Ability, replacing Defiant.
- Eleven previously unavailable and unusable moves.

The Indigo Disk (Version 3.0.0)

A new academy to attend, Blueberry Academy, located in the Unova Region.
- A new area to explore, the Terarium, located within Blueberry Academy.
The addition of eight new Pokémon (Archaludon, Hydrapple, Gouging Fire, Raging Bolt, Iron Boulder, Iron Crown, Terapagos, and Pecharunt), bringing the total to 1025.
The addition of fifteen new moves (Electro Shot, Tera Starstorm, Fickle Beam, Burning Bulwark, Thunderclap, Mighty Cleave, Tachyon Cutter, Hard Press, Dragon Cheer, Alluring Voice, Temper Flare, Supercell Slam, Psychic Noise, Upper Hand, and Malignant Chain), bringing the total to 934.
The addition of four new Abilities (Tera Shift, Tera Shell, Teraform Zero, and Poison Puppeteer), bringing the total to 307.
The addition of a nineteenth type, Stellar, accessible only through Terastallization.
Hisuian Qwilfish's method of evolution has been changed: it now evolves when leveled up while knowing Barb Barrage.
The return of:
- 139 previously unavailable Pokémon, bringing the overall total to 734.
- 29 previously unavailable and unusable moves.

This is the first generation:
- In which the player character's initial appearance changes between different game versions from the same pair.
- To begin in the same calendar year as the release of the final core series game of the preceding generation.
- Since Generation V to introduce at least 100 new Pokémon.
- To introduce a specialist for all eighteen Types (not counting the Titan Pokémon), with eight of them being Gym Leaders, four of them being the Elite Four members, five of them being the Team Star bosses, and one of them being an instructor at Naranja Academy^S/Uva Academy^V (as well as a former Gym Leader).
  - In addition, there is a second specialist of the Fighting type, who is also an instructor.

This generation introduced the fewest regional forms of a generation that introduced regional forms, with only four, three of them being forms of the same Pokémon.
This generation introduced the most:
- Gender unknown Pokémon, with a total of 33.
- Pokémon with no evolutionary family, with a total of 41.
This generation is tied with Generation VII and Generation VIII for introducing the most Legendary Pokémon, with eleven.
This generation took the longest to introduce a Mythical Pokémon, as Pecharunt was first hinted at in The Teal Mask and added into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet with The Indigo Disk.
This generation contains the longest gap between game releases in the history of the core series, with at least 775 days between Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
