Azurill's ball tail appears to be the biggest of its evolution family, this is due to Azurill's body itself being small. It is large and bouncy and packed full of the nutrients this Pokémon needs to grow. Azurill can be seen bouncing and playing on its big, rubbery tail. The tail is a flotation device in water. It is the only one of its evolutions with white to the side of its cheeks and not under its chest.

Azurill is the only Pokémon whose type changes completely upon evolution, excluding Eevee.
Azurill is also the first and currently only Pokémon whose gender ratio (75% ♀ / 25% ♂) is different than that of its evolved forms (50% ♀ / 50% ♂). This causes 1 in 3 female Azurill to evolve into male Marill. It is unknown if this is a programming error, or a reference to real-world animals that can change gender.
If it was in fact a programming error, the fact that it was not corrected in future games after Azurill first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire likely is due to the fact that an Azurill can be freely transferred between those games and all games released since then, as a gender change during a trade or during transfer via Pal Park would possibly be more jarring than during evolution.
