Pika Pika

Dude, Pikachu looks *nothing* like a pika. Seriously.

It does in pictures I saw in National Geographic...LedianX 05:46, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Not in any pictures I've ever seen. Pikas look more like nutrias to me.

I don't now what nutrias are, but I do know that Pikachu looks like a rabbit.

Regarding the name origin, I've been told that pikapika is an "expression for the brightness of gold", not simply just meaning sparkle. Can someone confirm? --Archaic 13:26, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

It is a very broad sound symbolism for sparkle - from daiya-ga pikapika hikaru (diamonds sparkle) to pikapika-no kagu (well-polished furniture), from hoshi-ga pikapika hikaru (stars twinkle) to pikapika-no ichinensei (not even going to try to figure this one out). I suppose it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say "gold shines" using pikapika. - 振霖T 14:48, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

pikapika-no ichinensei. Gah, I never wanted to hear that again. One company uses that almost like a motto in every one of their rather annoying ads. They're probably in some of the old encodes I did. --Archaic 01:13, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is there any official source that states that its name comes from pikapika and not from the pika? File:Ani164MS.gifShinyTalk | ContribsFile:Ani408MS.gifFile:Ani410MS.gif 00:33, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Honestly, Pikachu has the best name in my opinion, as it can have obvious meanings in both Japanese and English. As stated, Japanese has pikapika (sparkle) + chuchu (squeak). PLUS Pika (animal related to rabbit) and chu being homophonous to the English word "chew", like gnaw, as a rodent does. ^^ Official evidence or no, you have to admit it'd be some coincidence if the world's most popular Pokémon just happened to be the only one with such a perfectly suited name, neh? :3 Heart of Thorns 23:34, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Try not to write as if the subject were in the real world - comparisons to real domestic pets are simply unnecessary; instead, compare to other Pokémon. - 振霖T 08:10, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Kanto Native?

I noticed that in the games, Pikachu can only be found "in the wild" in the Kanto Region. In GSC, Pikachu was only on Route 2 in Kanto, in RSE, it was only in the Safari Zone, which contained only "imported" Pokemon (that is, no Generation III Pokemon), and in DP, it's only in the Trophy Garden, a place that's basically confirmed to be importing Pokemon from other regions.

These "coincidences" lead me to believe that Pikachu is native to the Kanto Region, and its appearance everywhere else is due to humans bringing them to other locals.

Ignoring anamonlies like Pokemon Ranger, would it be a stretch to say that Pikachu are normally found only in Kanto as a piece of Trivia?--PikamasterADV 19:37, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

What is your reason for ignoring Fiore? --FabuVinny T-C-S 18:44, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
I'd think it's Kanto-native, too, but yeah, Fiore brings up a problem. I do agree, though, that they plopped in in the Hoenn Safari Zone so that they could have an excuse to have it in the Hoenn Dex. --TTEchidna 19:25, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
Because it's a "Side Game". And then you include the "wild" Pikachu in Mystery Dungeon, the Pikachu in Trozei!, and the "gift" Pikachu in PBR and Japanese Colosseum. Ranger also has Wild Starter Pokemon, Wild Fossils, and other anomolies, so I didn't include it. It was mostly a thought about the core RPGs. --PikamasterADV 20:34, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
Your anomolies don't mean much. The Trozei Pokémon are not wild, nor are the gift Pokémon. Orre only has nine wild Pokémon, none of which cause issues. Mystery Dungeon is set in a different dimension. However, Fiore is an established region with links to the world of the main RPGs. Starter Pokémon have to be found wild somewhere so being specific to Fiore where trainers are not found makes a lot of sense. The only fossil there is Aerodactyl, which is suitably found in an ancient area, not that fossils are that special any more.
You can mention that it is the case in the handheld main series but the side games still count in the canon. --FabuVinny T-C-S 00:31, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Fly and Surf

How can Pikachu learn fly and surf? I know Gameshark can but can anyone write something to show really how? Kiewzhenyi 15:16, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

IT CAN'T! --File:Spr 3e 115.gifTheryguy512File:Spr 3e 202.gifFile:Spr 3e 327.gif 17:30, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

There are special promo Pikachu that learn these moves, but there is no way to teach a Pikachu these on its own. --DarkfireTaimatsu 18:54, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

I know that it can only be obtained through promos. I think writing in a more detailed way, exactly how it is being obtained and events to obtain it in the article would be more helpful. Kiewzhenyi 13:02, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

The TCG has a card called Flying Pikachu. The Pikachu has balloons tied around it, so that it could fly. Its attacks are Thundershock and Fly.

Old Glitch with the Yellow Pikachu. Use it in one of the two Stadiums through all eight battles in one of the cups and it can learn Surf. I personally have never been able to do it because I could never get my pika high enough to battle in the Cup, but I hear it can be done. Only method I know of. Xanhawk22:51 Dec. 21, 2008

That wasn’t a glitch, it only occurred in Stadium 1, it specifically had to be a Master Ball round, and any Pikachu would work… IIMarckus 04:55, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

GSC Tail

How is Pikachu's tail backwards in GSC? Could someone show me? I can't tell!--KukiTalk 18:51, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Look at the two backsprites, and compare it to those of RSE and DP. Tina 18:54, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, but doesn't Pikachu's tail move around to different positions? Couldn't the staff use the excuse that the Pikachu turned its tail?--KukiTalk 19:01, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Of course. Same as the excuse to have Ash leave all of his Johto team at home before Hoenn. TTEchidna 20:36, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
U don't need to be so rude about it!--KukiTalk 20:45, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Huh. In any case, it is quite apparent that they were trying to make the tail look more like a thunderbolt. ~ Zeofar 03:41, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Sexist!?

The heart-shaped tail of the female Pikachu is criticized as being sexist? At least that's what a user put in the trivia section. I haven't heard of such a thing. Anyone else? ~$aturn¥oshi THE VOICES 16:15, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Don't you know? Heart-shaped anything is sexist. BAN LUVDISC UNTIL THEY TURN IT INO A CD-ROM! TTEchidna 17:34, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Now that you mention it... How could I have ever forgotten? ~$aturn¥oshi THE VOICES 18:36, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Indeed, I would have to agree with that sexist theory, using this spectrum of thought; what do we associate hearts with? Love and cuteness. Not all females are cut and love-obsessed, I can assure you that... ((Forgive me if that argument sounds somewhat incoherent, as I am somewhat sleep-deprived.)) --Deoxys Ribonuke

Well, then I guess Heracross is sexist too then? As well as May's Bulbasaur. This is stupid, who ever brought that up? --ケンジガール 00:43, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

The point is that it makes no sense to point out that sometimes people stay angry after the topic was dropped for two months.--Loveはドコ? (talk contribs) 07:04, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Pikachu hasn't ....

Appeared at every movies. How about the Legend of Thunder Pikachu didn't appear. - unsigned comment from Justine53 (talkcontribs)

That is not a movie, that is a Pokémon Special for T.V only--Force Fire talk 06:10, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
The Legend of Thunder! (Japanese: ポケットモンスタークリスタル・ライコウ 雷の伝説 Pocket Monsters Crystal: Raikou - Legend of Thunder) is a made-for-TV anime movie. it has movie in it.- unsigned comment from Justine53 (talkcontribs)
It's not really a movie seeing as it was only seen on T.V and/or DVD, Not in Cinemas (I think). --Force Fire talk 06:53, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
There are currently 11 (to be 12) Pokémon movies. Mewtwo Strikes Back, The Power of One, Spell of the Unown, Pokémon 4Ever, Pokémon Heroes, Jirachi: Wish Maker, Destiny Deoxys, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, The Rise of Darkrai, and Giratina and the Sky Warrior. To the Conquering of Space-Time isn't yet released, but when it is in July it will be #12. Mewtwo Returns and The Legend of Thunder aren't movies. They're special episodes. In Japan, LOT and MR were covered in an hour, since LOT wasn't broken up by the morons at 4Kids over there. They were released in DECEMBER, not JULY, and DID NOT APPEAR IN JAPANESE MOVIE THEATERS. They aired on Thursday night at 7 like regular anime episodes for their debut. TTEchidna 08:01, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

How often has the species appeared in the anime...

...when it wasn't owned by Ash. In fact, was Sparky the most recent live Pikachu to appear? TTEchidna 10:16, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Uh...wasn't there a Pikachu named Sugar in DP024? ...but I think it was only a Pikachu in flashbacks. When it finally showed up it was a Raichu. -Sketch 12:21, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
No, it wasn't seen in flashback, and did not appeared in the episode at all, as I recall. TTE's right, if we are to count only the live Pikachu. --×Kevzo8 13:22, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Well that's an interesting thing then. Another one's not been in the main anime since JOHTO. TTEchidna 05:03, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Pikachu's clones slurred speech

It doesn't sound slurred to me. A little different from Ash's Pikachu's but not slurred Lovely Rose 00:50, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Egg Moves

As for Pikachu with special moves (like Nintendo Power's Surfing Pikachu), can the event move be passed down to offspring? Recalcitrancy 15:45, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Interesting question. I guess no. --Prongs (TalkContributions) 15:58, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

What!??

What the heck is the "Codec Information" thing on there?? It is not useful at all. Like the one on the page for Red (game). --FlamingStop 13:15, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

In Super Smash Bros Brawl, Solid Snake has a taunt only available on Shadow Moses island where he contacts a friend and they talk about someone he is fighting. Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lucario, and Pokémon Trainer, being in Brawl, all have Codec Discussions centering on them. The Dark Fiddler - You enter a poorly lit room... 13:17, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Yup. Thats true. Althought I never have got that thing to work. Glitchym1 22:11, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Pikachu replacing Clefairy...

"Pikachu was not the original Pokémon mascot. It was supposed to be Clefairy, but this was changed because of the popularity of Ash's Pikachu."

This was stated in a interview? If someone has the source, I would like to see it.

And I wish that statement would be more specific. When was decided that Clefairy would be the mascot? Was it when that crappy Pokémon manga proved successful in Japan? Or it was decided from the start, and the manga used Clefairy because of that? Spideym 22:54, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Pokémon Pikachu?

I've herd that in a Wario World game, Wario had a treasure called the Pokémon Pikachu. Is this true? The game was for GameBoy Colour. Glitchym1 22:06, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Light Ball in FR/LG?

This article says that wild Pikachu from Firered and Leafgreen can have lightballs. The item page says that only Pikachu from R/S/E/D/P/Pt can have lightballs. Has anyone definitely found a lightball in FR/LG? Cause I've been coveting like mad at the Power Plant and found none so far.--Gsnipe 00:38, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Humorous Detail

"Although its Pokédex entry in Yellow states that a Pikachu will try to bite anyone that yanks its tail, Pikachu is unable to learn Bite.

   * However, Ash's Pikachu has bitten him a few times in the anime. "

I didn't know a Pokémon needs to know Bite in order to bite you. Don't you think it's kinda silly to point out some thing any animal with can do regardless if it's a attack? User:roconza

The stomach pouch

In the trivia, it states that "In Pokémon Red and Blue, Pikachu's sprite shows it having a yellow stomach pouch. This is never shown again in later generations" - But two things - 1. The same area was in Pikachu's Green sprite and it could just be shading. So, should that be removed? Ugoz 08:36, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Nothing is over of belly to give it the shadow.--ForceFire 08:41, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Then we should basically say the same about Raichu. It's just color shading. We take most other sprite trivia off because this was just the first few years of their graphics, so why doesn't this get taken off for that reason? R.A. Hunter Blade 15:57, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Raichu is supposed to have a stomach pouch--ForceFire 10:05, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
It's not a pouch. It's just coloring. That's what I'm trying to tell you. R.A. Hunter Blade 13:41, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Cuteness

Brock states in "Showdown in Pewter City" that: "(Ash's) Pikachu is at his cutest stage. He cant win." Should this be added to the Physiology or trivia sections?
