Tyranitar (Japanese: バンギラス Bangiras) is a dual-type Rock/Dark pseudo-legendary Pokémon.

It evolves from Pupitar starting at level 55. It is the final form of Larvitar.

Biology

Physiology

Tyranitar is a large dinosaur-like Pokémon. The couple of fangs at the upper and lower jaw, and the fingers and toes culminating in claws, contribute to the menacing appearance of this Pokémon.

However, this Pokémon most prominent body feature is the green armor that covers its body. Despite its tough appearance, the armor is flexible enough to allow movement. Many spikes protrude from the back of its head, neck, shoulders and the tip of the tail. The armor also presents a couple of holes at the knees and the back, and four holes at the chest. There are also two blue rhombus-shaped pieces of armor that cover the creature’s belly and back.

Special abilities

Like some Dragon Pokémon, Tyranitar is capable of learning various elemental attacks, such as Surf, Flamethrower, and Thunder Fang. It can also learn some Dragon-type moves, such as Dragon Claw. Because it's a fully-evolved Pokémon, Tyranitar can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior

Like Ursaring, Tyranitar are dangerous Pokémon who are quite protective of their young. They are extremely strong, and their thick, rocky hides give them a good resistance. Because of this, they are always looking forward for a battle, and will not flinch at anything. Despite this, or possibly because the underside of Tyranitar's foot may be somewhat less well-armored than the rest of its body, it can have thorns stuck in its feet in which case the pain can cause it to become angry. If enraged, Tyranitar sets off outstanding earthquakes that can completely change the entire landscape, often representing a major headache for cartographers causing them to redraw maps. Tyranitar is known to display affection to persons that have been helpful to it by nuzzling them.

The Iron-Masked Marauder's Dark Tyranitar

Major appearances

Tyranitar first appeared in Celebi: Voice of the Forest. It was captured in a Dark Ball and used by the Iron-Masked Marauder.

A Pupitar belonging to Rico evolved into Tyranitar in A Poached Ego.

Minor appearances

When Ash and company entered the mind of Ash's Larvitar during Address Unown, they saw a vision of Larvitar being separated from its Tyranitar mother. That Tyranitar was seen during the following episode.

In Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part Two, a Tyranitar was among the Pokémon used to attack Dawn, Brock, Officer Jenny and Kellyn.

A Tyranitar appeared in A Faux Oak Finish!.

Another Tyranitar appeared in Dressed for Jess Success!.

Lance's Tyranitar

Prior to the events of Volume 8, Silver was given a Pupitar from Lance. It evolved into Tyranitar prior to Silver's showdown with Gold in Volume 9. Silver remarked that Tyranitar's level was so high that "even I can't control it," likely referencing the tendency for traded Pokémon to disobey. Silver eventually returned Tyranitar to Lance, deeming himself still unsuitable to own it.

Trivia

• Tyranitar has the highest base Attack stat of all Template:Type2 Pokémon.
• Tyranitar is the only Pokémon that is not a Template:Type2 to learn Earthquake by leveling up. This may be because it evolves from a Pokémon that is part Template:Type2.
• No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Tyranitar.
• Tyranitar shares the same species name with Donphan. They are both known as the Armor Pokémon.
• Most of the Tyranitar that have appeared in the anime have appeared with a Pokémon poacher. Three of them were owned by poachers and one was sought after by poachers.
• The Tyranitar from the 4th movie has the same roar that Dialga from movies 10-12 has.

Origin

Tyranitar’s appearance and the ability of shootings energy beams resembles that of the Japanese monster Godzilla, whose classical appearance is itself and amalgamation of three commonly known dinosaurs (Iguanodon, Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus).

Its penchant for shattering the countryside is similar to that of the Tarasque.

Name origin

Tyranitar's name is based on tyrannize, to violently antagonize. It may also be based on Tyrannosaurus, a carnivorous dinosaur that supposedly behaved violently. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 野蛮 yaban, savage, or 蛮 ban, barbarian, and 嫌い kirai, hate.
