Images on Pokémon pages

Is a battle screenshot preferable to no image at all when official Ken Sugimori art is not yet available for a new Pokémon? Or can I just leave the image blank for the time being since it's in the userspace? The Poké in question is Mamanbou. Thanks!--PhantomJunkie 00:45, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

As far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever the hell you wish as long as it's in the userspace. Hell, you could even use an image of an actual ocean sunfish, and I'm sure no one would care beyond being moderately repulsed by its ugliness. :P 梅子 00:51, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Are abilities?

Are abilities part of Project Games? If they are, is there a template like this for the abilities shown in the anime? Abcboy 14:45, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

I do believe abilities would fall under Project Games. However, such a template would fall under Project Anime, so I think you should talk to Kenji-girl about this instead. :D (For what it's worth, though, I think it's a decent idea.) 梅子 21:50, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

May I ask?

I don't know how to put pretty stuff on the user page like other people have. May you help me figure some of that information out? :3 KurosakisTwin 18:33, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Same question, right here. The templates consistently avoid my attempts to place them upon my user page. Tailzfoxy96 04:29, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Card Design Contest cards

Hi, Umeko. Could you take a look at this and this, and able to see what on earth the attacks say? The attacks are Steady Attack and Crisis Claw respectively. Thanks! ~~nuva-kal 20:56, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

They're kind of small, but I think I'll be able to make them out later (I'm currently running my computer on battery power, and the screen isn't as bright as it could be). I'll get back to you in a few hours. 梅子 22:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I can make out most of the text, but what I can't make out is the most crucial parts. 8D;;; I'll keep pondering over them, but I may have to wait until/if we get bigger scans. 梅子 16:02, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

What do I need to do. Any articles specifically?--Dbeckelheimer6 20:41, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Dillan Beckelheimer

Whatever you find that needs info added. Hoenn articles are a little lacking, if I recall correctly. I'd poke around myself to see what needs improvement, but I'm on vacation, so I can't really. ^^; 梅子 22:10, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to barge in, but did I hear someone needing help? Hmm. Depending on what games you have, if you have any of the Generation III/IV games, abilites and held items of Gym Leaders/rivals are greatly needed, as well as pay for Emerald. Anything else? Hmm. Here. ht14 22:12, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Romanization

I'm trying to romanize the Japanese name of Pretty Petal Flower Shop. The kana is フラワーショップ サン・トウカ, with a direct (and translated) romanization being "Flower Shop San Touka". I've found that certain locations, like San Marino or San Francisco, are translated and spelled in kana like San Touka here. However, san can also mean "Sun" and touka "lamplight" or "transmission". Thus, I was wondering what would be the most fitting interpretation, in order to use a correct romanization, and would like to ask for your assistance.

To me it reads like "san" is supposed to be "saint," so the romanization that I personally would go with would be "St. Touka." I'm not so sure, though; we could probably do with more insight. 梅子 19:34, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, it makes sense, as Touka seems to be a given name of someone or something. I wasn't aware that "saint" was also a meaning for san, though. Mind if I add the romanization you suggested? We can always change it later if greater insight proves it necessary but "St. Touka" seems reasonable to me.
Yeah, "san" is a loanword from Spanish (I believe; either that or Italian, probably), so while we could just go with "San" a la San Marino and San Fransisco, I think it's clearer if we go the extra mile and make it "saint." :V I am definitely open to other opinions though, if anyone is watching this discussion. 梅子 20:39, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
The translation into Saint is possible. The flower shop in Japan that writes as Saint exists though it is pronounced San. http://www.saintjordiflowers.com/. Sawamular101 20:54, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
I wish I knew Touka was the Japanese name of Petalburg earlier... ;-; After I added the rōmaji, I went to check the history and Tina said she left it blank because she wasn't sure of the meaning of the Japanese name but that Touka was Petalburg's name in Japanese (and I rechecked it too).
Thanks for the information, Sawamular. 20:56, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh duh, I knew "Touka" sounded familiar... XD 梅子 20:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Transliteration/Romanisation

Hello, Umeko. Is it possible to have translations and transliterations on pages, rather than one or the other? Recently, I attempted to add some transliterations to a few pages (i.e. Protect), which were removed, even though I did not delete the original translation, but instead added the transliteration too (in this case mamoru, in italics next to the Japanese equivalent "まもる".)

I thought that this would be perhaps helpful and perhaps a little more interesting for those Pokémon fans who wish to learn the Japanese names for Pokémon, places, characters, etc.

I would be more than happy to help in any way possible, samscarb

Considering they're in katakana or hiragana already, the stuff should be simple to read if you know that. Kanji should of course have a furigana {{tt}}'d over it, like ポケットモンスターSPECIAL金・銀 with "きん" and "ぎん" on the kanji for Gold and Silver. TTEchidna 03:24, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Request

Hey Ume, you know how we're like, best friends ever, right? Well, I was wondering if I could use your party template thingy? They're so cool and it would save space on my userpage too. Pretty please? I'll give you full credit of course.--Pokélova! 06:00, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Um.

I've noticed a lot of people with those awesome health/HP bars on their talk pages... how is that coded? PhantomJunkie 16:59, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Sawamular101 13:16, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Sawamular101 13:53, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

19:37, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
User:TTEchidna/BW001の罠の犠牲になりました。 Sawamular101 22:57, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Sawamular-san, please forgive me for responding in English this time. I'm using a school computer which doesn't have the Japanese IME, so it's very difficult to type in Japanese. I hope this will translate properly if you put it through a machine translation, but if doesn't, I can explain again in Japanese in a few hours.
CherryParanoia actually hasn't contributed to Bulbapedia in several months, so there isn't any need to keep an eye on her in the moment. However, if she comes back and does use "Jap" again, I will be sure to speak to her about it. I will do the same for any other users that I see using that word.
As for the BW001 page, I'm sorry that had to happen to you. TTEchidna, our Editor-in-Chief, is very much an idiot, and he made that page as a joke. I'll be sure to scold him for it.
Sawamular101 23:34, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Hahaha, nah, I'll scold him anyway (or I'll ask his girlfriend to do it). :P I'm glad you enjoyed his joke, but he's the kind of person who needs occasional scolding.
And he also owes me a Jolteon (Thunders) Pokedoll. 23:44, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Sawamular101 08:03, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

09:00, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
Sawamular101 09:46, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

D'oh. I feel stupid now. Werdnae (talk) 03:17, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Explain please

In the Gym Leader page, why is it necessary to have Aloe's row duplicated? Or the 3rd leader's sprite using Aloe's name temporarily, for the matter? --Kaoz 19:42, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

The third Gym Leader sprite is using Aloe's name temporarily because we don't know his/her name, so there's nothing to replace it with. Aloe's row is "duplicated" because the first one, which is visible now, has the bottom roundied, since it is currently the last one in the table. It will not be the last in the table once the others are made viewable, however, and when that happens it will have square corners on the bottom - which is that the "duplicate" is coded to do. So once the time comes to make all the leaders viewable, the first "duplicate" will simply be deleted. 梅子 19:57, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, all clear now. Did I, by any chance, use a false cognate? I'd have sworn dupicate was a legit verb.--Kaoz 21:02, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
It is a legit verb, my apologies for the confusion. I used quotes because they both use different, but very similar templates - so they aren't exact duplicates. XD; 梅子 21:58, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Also, a request...

Could you look through the list of links here and make the translations better if they are bad (since it's better ensure early that the names are as good as possible)? The kana used by the game is in a comment beside each link. (I used the Rikaichan Firefox addon for them so they should be at least better than machine translations.) Just tell me what this whole edit conflict is about, from your perspective... You really seem to know all the olgliarchs in Bulbapedia...TheRevived 04:16, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Basically, Bulbapedia talkpages, even user talkpages, aren't for irrelevant chatting such as that. Such discussions can be brought to the forums or email. And even if such discussion were allowed on talkpages, speculating about old trolls revolting on us really isn't productive.
Honestly, you shouldn't have kept reverting us when we removed your message to TTE. Just because you really want something doesn't mean it's going to happen. Think about it, pretty much the entire fanbase wanted Dawn's Piplup to evolve, but did it ever happen? No! Over all 191 episodes, Piplup never evolved, not even to Prinplup, even though it should have long been an Empoleon by the end of DP! And not only did it never evolve, but the animators completely alienated the fanbase by giving Piplup that Everstone. They did this even though every single fan, without exception, wanted Piplup to evolve. They just don't care about the fans at all.
So you shouldn't expect to get your way all the time. 04:28, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Like I said

The wording I revised, and there wasn't much if anything, was the things that, if you notice, give the reader the feeling that Isshu is New York. This, however, is not confirmed by anyone that actually have the authority to confirm it. The interview on Nintendo.co.jp and blog 177 on Game Freak's blog directly say : "New York is Isshu's motif". If you'll notice how many times I've pointed out that Motif does not mean Basis/Model/Stage, you would also notice how neutral I made the text while maintaining the statement "Isshu uses New York as it's motif". Please understand that I'm not saying it is not possible for Game Freak to come out later and outright say "New York is Isshu". I'm just saying it hasn't been said yet. And frankly, I want Bulbapedia to be as accurate as possible. --Mackinz of SoulSilver 02:40, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

The wording that was there seemed pretty nuetral to me. Just leave it alone Mackinz.--Pokélova! 02:42, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Keep your bullshit off my talkpage. You're pushing the English nuances of the word "motif" when the meaning of the Japanese loanword isn't necessarily the same. Furthermore, you aren't doing this out of respect for Bulbapedia's accuracy, but for your own personal grudge. Now drop it and kindly get your head out of your ass. 梅子 02:45, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
First of all, to PokeLova: ::The Isshu region (Japanese: イッシュ地方 Isshu-chihō) is a large area of the Pokémon world and the setting of the fifth generation Pokémon games Pokémon Black and White. It is far away from the four other large regions, and the Pokémon which inhabit Isshu are diverse and different from those of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. In his director's column, Junichi Masuda suggested that the geographical and social background for Isshu draws inspiration from New York City, although the region features rural locations as well as industrial.
In this case, the bolded is something I checked up on. I did not see the things that were stated in this paragraph. Although, my Japanese is not perfect so maybe I did miss it.
Although some of Isshu is geographically based on New York, the creators of the region took some liberties in regards to the surrounding areas. Clearly, the largest city in Isshu, Hiun City, is based on Lower Manhattan, but to the immediate north of Hiun is (as opposed to a continuing metropolis as in real life) a vast desert. To the east and west of the region are large mountains. Isshu also contains many rural settlements.
In this case, however, the bolded shows exactly the parts that aren't neutral and that I changed to neutral.
Compare:
Although Isshu's basis is not truly known, the creators of the region ensured us varying terrain. Clearly, the largest city in Isshu, Hiun City, draws inspiration from Lower Manhattan, but to the immediate north of Hiun is a vast desert. To the east and west of the region are large mountains. Isshu also contains many rural settlements.
Now to Umeko:
Keep your bullshit off my talkpage. You're pushing the English nuances of the word "motif" when the meaning of the Japanese loanword isn't necessarily the same. Furthermore, you aren't doing this out of respect for Bulbapedia's accuracy, but for your own personal grudge. Now drop it and kindly get your head out of your ass. 梅子 02:45, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Please note, I'm not trying to start an argument with you here. You are unnecessarily angry with me. However, you are wrong. The nuances of the word motif come with the word no matter the context. The fact that motif was used proves it was meant to be used in the way it is defined. If it wasn't meant to be used the way it is defined, why would he even bother using it? Would a native Japanese speaker feel inclined to use a loanword if there's a native Japanese word that essentially means the same in his eyes? No, he would not. Junichi Masuda did not use the Japanese word "stage" like he did for Hoenn when he made the statement on the interview. He used the English loanword Motif.
Now, my own personal grudge? Frankly, I'm keeping all of my personal beliefs about Isshu out of this discussion. There was that one time where someone asked me where I think Isshu is based off and I said it then, but I did not mention it before that or after that question ever again.
Now please, if there are any official sources that have confirmed something beyond the level of "motif" for Isshu, post them, let me read them, and I will stop my crusade. If not, the neutral version is the one that should be used as it is more accurate to my knowledge.
I'm sorry for all the editing. --Mackinz of SoulSilver 02:58, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Sawamular101 06:29, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Sawamular101 08:31, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

/* Blocked On Twitter */

Hello there, Just recently discovered the anything goes Pokedex and it just has some hilarious results. For some reason I can't seem to follow you on Twitter as my account has been blocked (twitter.com/JEFFBM). Please tell me why i was blocked because i enjoyed reading your tweets especially since I'm trying to learn Japanese so I'm trying to read the tweets you post in Nihongo. Thanks in advance and keep on keeping on. JEFF 17:33, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Whoops, I'm sorry about that! I often go through my followers list and block accounts that look like they're either bots or people who randomly added me just for plumping up their following list. I try not to block people who might legitimately be interested in what I say, but it seems that you might have gotten caught in the crossfire by accident, and for that I apologize. XD I'll unblock you now~ 梅子 17:41, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Re: Knock knock

Hey Ume, I think you might wanna look at this conversion. As you can speak Japanese fluently, so I think you can make a better decision otherwise it's just turning into a useless/forumiSH/flame war and I really don't like this drama type conversations. When you get time then please check it out, thanks. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 05:59, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Me being fluent in Japanese or not really has no relevance here, but if you really want my opinion, I think we should just keep it where it is for the time being. He'll be renamed when the dub comes around, and there's really no reason that "Shooty" is any more of a viable romanization than "Shooti." Keep it where it is, make a few redirects maybe, dust off your hands, wait for the dub, and then be done with it. The end. 梅子 06:05, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I'll go and announce it on that dramatic talk page. Thanks for the suggestion. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 06:11, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Yup. If, on the off chance, TPCi decides to keep his name, and spells it "Shooty"... then I think we can consider spelling his Japanese name with a Y. But as it stands, neither is really more or less "correct" than the other. 梅子 06:13, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

BW 005 Incomplete Symbosus

Why add the template Incomplete Synopsis to a page before the episode aired?Patrickmck 02:56, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Because it's incomplete. 03:02, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh. Somehow I got the impression that the template was added after the episode has aired, but I guess not. Thanks.Patrickmck 13:38, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
