Mankey, though presumed to be partly named after humans, bears almost no resemblance to them. Mankey more resembles various primates. Mankey has a round body covered in whitish, messy fur. Mankey's ears are triangular with brown insides, and its arms, two-toed feet, and its curved tail is tipped with brown coloration. Mankey has a nose similar to a pig or tepig.

Mankey specialize in physical fighting, but they can sometimes know elemental attacks (though they don't usually excel at them).
Behavior
Mankey are very aggressive and short-tempered. Anyone that gets on its bad side (which is easily done), will receive a severe thrashing. When Mankey starts shaking and its nasal breathing turns rough, it's a sure sign that it is becoming angry. However, because it goes into a towering rage almost instantly, it is impossible for anyone to flee its wrath. Mankey lives in treetop colonies, and if one becomes enraged, the whole colony rampages for no reason. If Mankey loses sight of its colony, it becomes infuriated by its loneliness.
Mankey can be found in vibrant forests, in mountains, or in valleys with rivers running through them. They are most common in Kanto, but can be found in Johto and rarely in Sinnoh.
The preferred food appears to be Chestnuts, although Mankey usually lack the dexterity to peel them. They are also occasionally found with the Payapa Berry.
In A Tyrogue Full of Trouble, a Primeape was causing problems for a small town along with a Mankey and a Tyrogue. A Trainer named Kiyo was able to capture the Tyrogue, and the Mankey and Primeape joined up with him.
A pack of Mankey, led by an enraged Primeape, attacked Blue and Yellow in Volume 5, but his Porygon managed to defeat it. Yellow was the one to quell the leader and have them leave peacefully, however.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Three Mankey are the boss of Uproar Forest. After being defeated, they follow the player back to the rescue base. The Mankey help with the remodeling of the base but go on strike half-way through until they receive two peeled chestnuts.

Mankey can be seen as a parallel to Meowth. Both of them are Generation I Pokémon who evolve into their evolved forms at or above level 28. Mankey is exclusive to Pokémon Red, Gold, and HeartGold, while Meowth is exclusive to Pokémon Blue, Silver, and SoulSilver. Additionally, both seem to have a similar color scheme.

Considering its pig-like nose, long tail, and overall personality, Mankey have much in common with baboons.
Name origin
Mankey's name may be a hybrid of the words man and monkey. It also comes from the word manky, which means inferior, dirty or worthless, which could be derogatory terms. Another theory is that Mankey's name is a combination of the words mad and monkey, due to this Pokémon's contrary and aggressive personality.
