Cynthia (Japanese: シロナ Shirona) is the Champion of the Sinnoh region's Elite Four in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. She seems to have an intrest in ruins.
In the games
Sinnoh
Cynthia helps the main character against Team Galactic in a point in the game. In Platinum, when encountered in Eterna City, she will give the player an egg from which Togepi will hatch. She is also found on Route 214 after the player has defeated Crasher Wake and received the Fen Badge. She gives the player the SecretPotion to get past the Psyduck group on Route 210 to get to Celestic Town. She then gives the player the Old Charm to give to her grandmother. She is very interested in mythology and history, and spends her time researching and exploring various sites associated with legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region. Her family lives in Celestic Town, although her own hometown is unknown. She is implied to have helped Rowan with his Pokédex and embarked on an adventure similar to the protagonist as a child.
In Platinum, after Giratina appears in Spear Pillar and takes Cyrus down with it, Cynthia rushes to the scene and assists the player during their trip to the Distortion World. She then expresses that everything that happened was destined, even though she wished that she was the one who battled Giratina.
Later, she reappears as the Pokémon League Champion.
After beating the game, if the player visits Celestic Town Ruins, she will come and explain what the ruins mean.

In the Sinjoh Ruins
Cynthia makes an appearance in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, doing further investigation on the origins of Arceus and the creation trio. If the player has an Arceus with a fateful encounter marker, when the main character visits the Ruins of Alph, it will reveal the Sinjoh Ruins. Inside, Cynthia is found, and will tell the player that Arceus will let him/her obtain a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. If the player returns with an Arceus caught at the Hall of Origin, which has not yet had its event item released, they will be informed she has returned to Sinnoh and the event will run without her.
In Unova
Cynthia also makes an appearance in Pokémon Black and White. She can be battled in a house in Undella Town, though she can only be rebattled in the spring and summer. After defeating her, Shauntal and Caitlin can be seen visiting this house. In the summer, it can be visited by Lenora, Elesa, Iris and Skyla. She speaks about a young Trainer who defeated her, and mentions that that Trainer defeated Giratina, referencing to the events of Pokémon Platinum.

Quotes
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
- Before battle (First battle)
- "Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. And the Distortion World. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"
- Before battle (Rematch)
- "One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. That's enough talking. Let's get on with why you're here. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge as the Pokémon League Champion! There won't be any letup from me!"
The bottom quote is only said the very first time she is challenged. After winning at least once, it permanently changes to the top quote.
- During battle (after sending out last Pokémon)
- "I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"
- During battle (less than half HP)
- "I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"
- When defeated
- "Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!"
- After beating the Elite Four, Platinum only
- "This cave painting...It's always been described this way. The light in the center represents either Dialga or Palkia appearing at the Spear Pillar. The three lights around it were thought to be Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. May I continue? But, then, I realized that there may be another way of interpreting this. Could this triangle of lights actually represent a different trio? Could they be Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina instead? And the large light at their center. Does it represent something else? Could it be what created this world of ours? May I continue for a little bit longer? Thank you for listening to my theory. Do you know of the ancient Plates they find all over Sinnoh? One of them had this engraved on it. 'Two beings of time and space set free from the Original One.' I think this quote, too, points to the presence of another Pokémon. A Pokémon even more powerful than Dialga or Palkia. Does that sound plausible to you? I'm not quite sure how Giratina fits into this scheme of things, but... It's said that in the Distortion World, neither time nor space were stable. I think that tells us something about Giratina, the only Pokémon there. It must have been as powerful as Dialga and Palkia, the rulers of time and space. In some way, though, Giratina has to have a power opposite of theirs. I'm sorry this is so long. May I say one last bit? A long time ago, I wonder what sort of person painted this? Dialga's Roar of Time...Palkia's Spacial Rend...To the people back then, those Pokémon really must have appeared to rule over time and space. Seeing them must have shaken the people to their very core. This painting represents those feelings of awe, wonder, and everything else. It passed that memory to countless people, eventually becoming a myth...That's what I believe as a researcher of myths. I think I let myself get carried away and talked for far too long. I'm sorry, and thank you. Let's meet again."
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
- "My name is Cynthia. I am a Pokémon Trainer. The Sinjoh Ruins remind me of Sinnoh, where I come from. Initially, I thought it was because it snows a lot here as well. But that was not it. A long time ago... people came from Sinnoh to live here. They must have built a temple here while longing for home. That's why we call these the Sinjoh Ruins... You are... a Pokémon Trainer? I can sense strong power coming from your Poké Ball... I feel a familiar presence... The power of Dialga... Palkia... or could it be Giratina? It's similar, but not quite the same... Have you got time? Can you come to the Sinjoh Ruins with me? Call it a Trainer's intuition. When you and your Pokémon step onto that stage, something will happen."
- "This is the Mystri Stage. The mythical stage built to show respect for Arceus. It is said that people used to celebrate its magnificent might with music and dance. Some people in Johto still pass down this tradition."
- If the player does not have only a single Arceus in the party
- "The Mystri Stage allows a single Arceus and nothing else to get on the stage... If you wish to go up there, you will have to deposit your other Pokémon in PC Box at the cabin."
- If the player only has a single Arceus in the party
- "According to an ancient document, time, space, and antimatter, or what combined we call the world, shall be born when Arceus stands on the Mystri Stage. This is where one might say, "The lead enters the Mystri Stage at last." All my study of ruins and Pokémon mythology in Sinnoh may have been to bring you up on this stage here today... Depicted on the Mystri Stage are the Pokémon that shaped this world. The circle in the middle is Arceus, the origin of it all... This is the pattern that represents Palkia, the master of space and dimensions... This is the pattern that represents Dialga, the guardian of time... This is the pattern that represents Giratina, the ruler of the world that is on the opposite side of ours, the world of antimatter... Arceus has accepted you as a Trainer. Arceus, having shaped the world, is said to show you a glimpse of its true power. The power of possibly making life appear out of nothing... It seems that something will happen when you chose one of the circles... You'll want to be well prepared."
- "Once you are ready, choose a circle and stand in the middle of it."
- Standing on Dialga's circle
- "So you choose Dialga, the guardian of time?"
- Standing on Palkia's circle
- "So you choose Palkia, the master of space and dimensions?"
- Standing on Giratina's circle
- "So you choose Giratina, the ruler of the Distortion World?"
- "That shining sphere... Could it be...an Egg? Did we just witness the very moment an Egg was brought to this world? A moment no one has ever seen? An Egg is the cradle of every being. The planet itself is an Egg in a sense... Life that comes from an Egg will come to an end in due course... to begin anew... That may be what Arceus wanted to show us."
- "That was...? We seem to be surrounded by that strong power again...!"
Pokémon Black and White
- Before battle
- "What's this?"
- "What an uncanny resemblance... It's surprising to meet another Trainer who has intense eyes like that Pokémon Trainer. What's your name? ... OK. I'll remember that! <Player>, nice to meet you. I'm Cynthia. I'm a Pokémon Trainer, too, like you. I have an insatiable curiosity for researching Pokémon myths."
- "I'm sure you know about Undella Town's Abyssal Ruins, right? I'm staying here at my friend's villa so I can investigate them."
- "In order to get to know each other better as Pokémon Trainers, I would like our Pokémon to have a match. Would you care to be my opponent?"
- No: "Ha ha. You prefer to take things slowly and rationally, am I right? When you're ready, come talk to me. I'll be happy to see you."
- "Oh. You've had a chance to get ready? I do want our Pokémon to have a match... Are you prepared to be my opponent?"
- Yes: "Before I send out my Pokémon, my heart always begins to race... Interesting... My Pokémon in their Poké Balls are radiating a happy feeling. Are you the reason? What are you?"
- After sending out last Pokémon:
- "When was the last time I was driven into a corner like this?"
- During battle (less than half HP):
- "You haven't won yet! I won't let such a fun battle end so easily!"
- When defeated:
- "My heart is pounding so hard because I had such a heated battle with you. You are a really great Trainer!!"
- After being defeated:
- "That was beyond my expectation! What an exceptional battle! You certainly bear a resemblance to that Trainer who faced Giratina... Oh, pardon me. I was just thinking out loud. I love being here in spring and summer. I can't stay all year, because there's so much to investigate in Sinnoh, as well. You're a great Trainer, and it would make me happy to see you again sometime."
- General afterword:
- "I love to come here in spring and summer. But there are a lot of things to investigate in Sinnoh, as well. I'd be delighted to see you again. You're an awesome Pokémon Trainer!"
- During Spring and Summer:
- "I'd love to live here...But if I did, there would be a mountain of research piled up...Am I right? Cynthia, enough for now! Next time, clean up."
- "What is necessary for becoming stronger than you are now? My answer is simply loving Pokemon with all your heart. That's how I am, so that's all I can say."
- "Hmm. This is difficult. I was greedy and bought a lot of swimsuits, but now I can't pick which one to wear.:"
- "Here's my problem. I have a white swimsuit and a black swimsuit...Which one would look better on me?"

Cynthia first appears in Vs. Roserade II where she is seen correctly predicting the evolutions of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum's Tru, Chimler, and Prinplup. After laughing at Dia and Pearl's Manzai, she decided to give Platinum some advice for her upcoming Gym challenge against Gardenia. Afterwards, she invades the Galactic Eterna Building and frees the bike store owner, Rad Rickshaw, with ease using her Spiritomb's Psychic combined with attacks of Diamond's Tru and Platinum's Prinplup. She later appears at Mr. Backlot's mansion where she investigates a case of missing Psyduck and takes the group to Route 210 and uses the Secret Potion to cure the Psyduck roadblock of their headaches. After meeting up with her grandmother, Cynthia takes the one Psyduck that belonged to a Trainer back to it's owner, lending her Garchomp to them for protection. In Vs Honchkrow during Diamond and Pearl's infiltration of the Galactic HQ, she personally challenges Cyrus to a one on one battle, despite her best efforts and powerful Pokémon she is unable to defeat him and he escapes with her too exhausted to follow. Names
Language | Name | Origin |
---|---|---|
Japanese | シロナ Shirona | A Japanese name for chard. Contains 白 shiro, meaning "white". |
English, French, German | Cynthia | Possibly chosen due to similarity to "synthesis", or combining different pieces into one entity, which is a reference to the fact she combines several types in her arsenal. This name also refers to the Greek goddess Artemis, who is associated with the moon, which may be a parallel to Cyrus whose name refers to the sun. |
Italian | Camilla | Probably derived from Camilla, an Amazon warrior described in the Aeneid. |
Spanish | Cintia | Spanish equivalent of the name Cynthia. As in English, it refers to the Greek moon goddess Artemis (Artemisa in Spanish), as a counterpart to Helio (Cyrus), whose name comes from Helios, the Greek solar deity. |
Korean | 난천 Nancheon | Possibly from 난초 nancho (orchid). |
Chinese (Mandarin) | 竹蘭 Zhúlán | Literally Bamboo orchid. May be derived from 竹葉蘭 Zhúyèlán (bamboo orchid) or 扁竹蘭 Biǎnzhúlán (bamboo iris). Possibly chosen due to their symbolism, since the bamboo is known for its versatility, resilience and strength, while the orchid symbolizes beauty, perfection and virtue. Also rhymes with 木蘭 (Mulan). |
