In Generation III games, one can enter his or her Pokémon into a Pokémon Contest, while in Generation IV games, Pokémon can be entered in Super Contests.

There are five different categories of contests, used in Pokémon Contests as well as Super Contests. These Contest categories, also called Contest conditions, are: Coolness, Beauty, Cuteness, Smartness, and Toughness. Each Pokémon move is categorized under one of these five categories, corresponding generally with the nature of the move, fire moves such as flamethrower becoming Beauty and fighting moves including brick break becoming Tough. In addition, Berry flavors, Pokéblock and Poffin colors, and Pokémon natures are associated with certain Contest categories. A Poffin depending on its flavour, a spicy poffin maximizing a Pokémon's coolness. These attributes are recognized in Visual Competition, in which the player dresses up his/her pokemon which then are judged by the amount of hearts rising from the heads of the audience.

Despite that they are not utilized in the game at all besides the fact that a very beautiful Feebas transferred from earlier games will still evolve into Milotic, Contest conditions are still in the code of Generation V games and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
