Heatran is a tortoise-like creature (which might also be based on a ram) with a reddish-brown body that has orange and gray spots. Heatran has metal bangles locked on its legs and the four claws on each of its feet are in a cross formation. Heatran has a gray underside, its face is covered by an iron mask and has red-orange eyes. Whenever it is seen with its mouth open, an orange glow emanates from inside it. Because of its intense body heat, certain parts of its body are melted slightly out of shape.

Heatran is the only Pokémon to take less than normal damage from both Dragon- and Template:Type2 moves, and that only occurs because of its ability, which gives immunity to Template:Type2 moves.
Heatran is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon that learns Stone Edge by leveling up, probably due to be the only of them to have Template:Type2 as one of its types.

Heatran is the first Pokémon in the National Pokédex to be in no regional Pokédex.
Origin
Heatran is most likely based on volcanic remains. Its Steel-typing references how the Earth's inner core is made of solid metal under immense pressure. It may also be based on a turtle, as the Pokémon Platinum Pokédex entry states that it is melted in parts because of its own heat and in the artwork, bits of metal, which may possibly be a melted shell, can be seen on its body.
Name origin
Its name comes from the words heat and possibly transfer. The "-tran" may also come from transition metal, referring to its status as a Template:Type2 (note that steel itself is not a transition metal, but an alloy of one). The "doran" in its Japanese name can also be read as "dran", so it may be a combination of "heat" and "dragon".
