Petalburg Woods (Japanese: トウカのもり Tōka Woods) is a forest that connects Petalburg City to Rustboro City. It appears in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
Geography
Starting at what is later revealed to be the westernmost of two southern entrances, the player is led on a winding path through many patches of grass. The tall trees cast an eternal shadow over the ground, but it is still possible to see. It is dark enough, however, that other travelers have had the misfortune to drop and lose their items on the ground. It is possible to find these without technological assistance, but the Itemfinder makes searching a great deal easier.
The Petalburg Woods are abundant with Wild Pokémon. Many low-leveled Template:Type2 Pokémon make it their home and can commonly be encountered in tall grass, but there are rarer Pokémon here as well. Slakoth and Shroomish can only be found within the confines of the forest. These rare Pokémon are often sought by collectors in nearby Rustboro City.
Near the northern exit to Route 104, a pair of saplings block a forked path to the east. When HM01 (Cut) has been obtained, and the Rustboro Gym Leader Roxanne defeated in battle the bushes may be temporarily cleared. This allows access to the easternmost half of the forest, which ultimately ends up on an otherwise inaccessible southern part of Route 104.
Petalburg Woods must be traversed several times over the course of the game. The first time, traveling north, introduces players to Team Magma (in Ruby only), Team Aqua (in Sapphire and Emerald), and the Devon Corporation. An Devon employee is under attack by the member of the villainous team, and requests assistance. Once the Grunt is defeated, the man will reward the player with a Great Ball before making his way back to his company headquarters. This will not be the last time he, or the Grunt, is seen.
Later in the game, players must travel south through the Woods to return to Petalburg City, and also to reach Dewford Town via Mr. Briney's boat. This boat is docked on nearby Route 104.

Trainer Tips
TRAINER TIPS
Any POKéMON that appears even once
in a battle is awarded EXP Points.
To raise a weak POKéMON, put it at the
left of the team list.
As soon as a battle starts, switch it
out. It will earn EXP Points without
being exposed to any harm.
TRAINER TIPS
In addition to Hit Points [HP], POKéMON
have Power Points [PP] that are used to
make moves during battle.
If a POKéMON runs out of PP, it must be
taken to a POKéMON CENTER.
In the anime
Ash, May, Brock, and Max make their way through Petalburg Woods over the course of several episodes. Ash's Taillow, May's Wurmple, Jessie's Wurmple, James's Cacnea, and Jessie's Seviper are all captured in Petalburg Woods. It is also the location where Jessie and James release their Arbok and Weezing into the wild.
