Spheals are round, baby seal-like Pokémon. Their plushy fur is a baby blue color, with several white spots on its back and a beige underside. They have circular eyes, small tusks protruding from their upper jaw, stubby ears, beige flippers and a little flat tail. Curiously, its rounded, spherical appearance makes it bear resemblance to a balloon, or a ball.
Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body, for it is much faster than walking and because its body is poorly shaped for swimming. Despite this, it may dive into the sea, in which case its fur keeps it from feeling cold. When groups of Spheal eat, they all clap at once to show their pleasure. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.
Glacia of the Elite Four has a Spheal that she uses, along with a Snorunt, to try to open Regice's seal to no avail. Several other Spheal are seen throughout following chapters.
Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Spheal stars in the Bonus Field Whiscash or Pelipper takes the player to. They will swim in the pool and occasionally try to climb up the ice slide. Hitting a Spheal at this time will send it to a Sealeo's nose, earning five times the points from just bouncing the Poké Ball.

Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body. When the season for ice floes arrives, this Pokémon can be seen rolling about on ice and crossing the sea.
Spheal's evolution line, along with Dewgong, are the only Pokémon to have a "triple resistance," thanks to the Thick Fat Ability.
Spheal can be seen as a parallel to Seel. Spheal is an Ice/Water-type Pokémon, while Seel evolves into a Water/Ice-type Pokémon. In Generation IV, Spheal is exclusive Pokémon Pearl, while Seel is exclusive Pokémon Diamond, with both found in the same locations in their respective versions. Additionally, both can only be obtained by breeding their evolved forms in Pokémon Platinum. Both Pokémon also appear to be based on Pinnipeds.
Spheal's evolution line are the only Pokémon with the Water/Ice combination to have Ice as its primary type.
