I checked a few of my manuals:

  • English Red: refers to him as "rival"
  • English Blue: refers to him as "rival"
  • Japanese Blue: refers to him as "Red (rival)"
  • Japanese Yellow: refers to him as "Blue (rival)"

So, is the piece about him being referred to as Gary referring to the instruction manuals somewhere, or to players guides? --Meowth346
