Nero (Japanese: ヌシ Nushi) is the nickname of a Whiscash, one of the giant Pokémon who appeared in the Pokémon anime.

History

Nero first gains the attention of a Fisherman named Sullivan. Impressed by how big it was, he is determined to capture it. However, no matter how many times he tried, Nero always escapes from him.

Ash wants to get Nero as well, but for a completely different reason. While fishing in the lake Nero resided in, the Pokémon swallows Ash's Badge case and refuses to give it back. The young Trainer is desperate to get back his case, as well as the five Badges he has already earned.

With the help of Pikachu's Thunder on Team Rocket, Nero flies out of the water and spat out Ash's Badge case. Sullivan, however, isn't as lucky. When attempting to capture Nero with a Master Ball, the Pokémon eats it, and jumps back into the lake.

Sullivan promised that he would keep trying to capture Nero, and as Ash and his friends bid farewell to the Fisherman. Nero is last seen playing with the Master Ball on its tongue.

Trivia

  • Nero's name is most likely derived from Emperor Nero, who ruled Rome from 54 to 68 CE. Nero's name may also be derived from the Greek word nero (νερό) meaning 'water'.
  • In Finnish, "nero" means "genius". This would reflect Nero's higher than average intelligence.
