Two Jellicent present different appearances depending on their gender, as seen in the anime

Some species of Pokémon have differences in appearance due to gender in the Pokémon world, with noticeable differences between the males and females. With the exception of the differences between male and female Nidoran, gender differences were introduced in Generation IV.

These differences are a reference to sexual dimorphism, which is commonly seen in many real lifeforms and may offer some clues to their biology and behavior.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, in the gate to Canalave City, Professor Rowan's assistant upgrades the player's Pokédex to be able to display the images for both genders of a species (as well as other form differences). In subsequent games, they are displayed from the start.

Generation V Pokémon

The gender differences introduced in Generation V are far more drastic than the ones from other generations. These are the only Pokémon with unique Ken Sugimori artwork and box sprite for each gender, other than Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂. Additionally, their gender differences are indirectly referred to as forms in Pokédex 3D, but are not given individual Collection entries in Pokémon Rumble Blast, unlike most Pokémon with form differences, such as Deerling.
