Primal Reversion (Japanese: ゲンシカイキ Primal Regression) is an ancient transformation that debuted in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Primal Reversions are identified by having "Primal" in front of their name. It is similar to Mega Evolution, but instead of using the energy of people and Pokémon, the user instead absorbs the energy of nature to greatly increase its power.
In order to undergo Primal Reversion, the Pokémon must be holding the appropriate Orb. Unlike Mega Evolution, a player does not have to trigger the Primal Reversion, and it will just happen automatically after entry hazards. A player may have as many Primal Reversions on his or her team as he or she likes. It is not limited to one per battle like Mega Evolution is.

In the TCG
Primal Reversion will be brought into the Trading Card Game with the release of Primal Clash (Gaia Volcano • Tidal Storm in Japan). Primal Reversion is an extension of the Mega Pokémon-EX mechanic, evolving from the long-standing Pokémon-EX. The only Primal Pokémon-EX are the Primal Kyogre-EX and Primal Groudon-EX being released in the expansion. Although not exclusive to the mechanic, each Primal Reversion Pokémon features a new card effect named Ancient Trait, providing an additional effect for each card.
