Pokémon world locations

The Seafloor Cavern (Japanese: かいていどうくつ Seabed Cavern) is a location in Hoenn, deep beneath the seas of Route 128. In order to reach it, players must have Surf and Dive, as well as the proper Badges (Balance Badge and Mind Badge) to use the moves outside of battle. Once inside, Strength and Rock Smash are also required.

The search for the cavern begins when Team MagmaROR or Team AquaSEAS steals Submarine Explorer 1 from Captain Stern in Slateport City. In Ruby and Omega Ruby, the cavern is the home of Groudon, who sleeps at its deepest part, while in Sapphire, Emerald, and Alpha Sapphire, Kyogre is the Pokémon who sleeps here, while Groudon's home (only in Emerald) is within the Magma Hideout, deep inside of the caverns of Mt. Chimney.

The player's quest to find the villainous team begins almost immediately after winning their seventh Badge. With a Pokémon that can dive underwater in their party, they can now navigate the maze of deep trenches on the routes of Hoenn's eastern sea. In the deepest one of them, smack dab in the middle of Route 128's pathway, is the entrance to the Seafloor Cavern, where the stolen submarine is parked.

After resurfacing inside the cave where the submarine is parked, players must navigate through the complex maze of tunnels to the deepest part, where the legendary Pokémon resides. Here they will also find the boss of the team that has stolen the submarine, Maxie or Archie, who will attempt to control the legendary Pokémon of his desire using one of the orbs found at the top of Mt. Pyre. However, the Pokémon will not respond well, and instead will escape, causing severe rain or sunlight, depending on which it is. In Emerald, both types of weather conditions appear, and they change after the player takes enough steps (counting actions like using Fly).

From here, the player must go to Sootopolis City and into the Cave of Origin, either to catch the powerful legendary PokémonRSORAS or to talk to Wallace to deduce where Rayquaza is locatedE.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

The Seafloor Cavern served similar purposes in the Ruby & Sapphire arc of Pokémon Adventures to its purpose in the games. Members of both Team Magma and Team Aqua traveled there using Submarine Explorer 1 fitted with a component produced by the Devon Corporation. They aimed to awaken Groudon and Kyogre, respectively. Ruby and Sapphire used a Relicanth to Dive to the cavern.

The Seafloor Cavern was erroneously called the "Cave of Origin" in the Chuang Yi translations of Pokémon Adventures Volumes 19, 20, and 21.
