List of unused Pokémon and character designs
From Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia.
The Pokémon in Pokémon Gold and Silver were just a few of many different designs that Game Freak created. Only 100 new Pokémon were added, and even those often went through redesigns before making it into the final product.
Unreleased Pokémon
Kurusu
- This creature resembles a seal, but doesn't seem to have much relation to any Pokémon as of yet, meaning its design or concept may have been totally scrapped. Although there is the possibility it was later changed into Spheal. It might also have been changed into Gastrodon East Sea.
Unnamed mammal
- A strange creature that appeared as art, but was never released. It has been said to resemble Hitmontop or Meowth. It could also evolve from Clefairy or Clefable.
Unnamed turtle
- A turtle Pokémon that was never released. It's possible it was later heavily reworked into Torkoal. It may also be a prototype of Blastoise.
Unreleased Unown
- In Spell of the Unown, Professor Oak had pictures of unreleased Unown on his computer.
Altered Pokémon
Bukū
- Bukū's name is derived from "fugu", the Japanese word for blowfish. It's likely it was a prototype for Qwilfish.
Happa
- Happa's name simply means "leaf" in Japanese. It appears to be an early design of Chikorita.
Honōguma
- Honōguma's name is a combination of 炎 honō for flame, and 熊 kuma for bear. It would seem that it was either altered into or replaced by Cyndaquil. It could also be part of the Pikachu family.
Kirinriki
- Concept art for an early design of Girafarig.
Mariru
- This purple creature was early art for Marill. The design for Whismur was probably based off of this.
Tyranitar
- Early art of Tyranitar.
Unreleased characters
Female trainer
- Art of a female character that was never used.
Male trainer
- Art of a male trainer that was never used.
