The player first meet Deerling and Shelmet at the Serene Village plaza arguing about a dare that Pancham and Shelment had made. The player finds out that they had dared Goomy into writing its name on a piece of paper the pair had left behind at Foreboding Forest when running away after becoming scared. The player then decides to head in to save Goomy.

The students become formally introduced to the player at school the next morning. Over the next several days, the students and the player continue to attend school until the Summer holidays approach.

During the Summer break, the player and the students find out that multiple staff members of the school had fainted or gone missing during night at the school. Pancham dares the others to meet up at the school to find these rumored ghosts. That night, everyone shows up and the "ghosts" appear. At the sight of a huge shadow, everyone faints except for Espurr, who pretends to be unconscious. Pancham and Shelmet are kidnapped and Espurr follows. Later, Espurr returns and tells the others who have now awaken that Pancham and Shelmet had been taken to the Ancient Barrow. They all head there, where at its end they meet the "Dark Land Emissary".

The next day after the events at the Ancient Barrow, the students meet the player without the player's partner (who is being lectured by his father). In place of the player's partner, the player chooses one of the five students for the day's missions. After completion of the mission, the player becomes connected to all five.

Soon after these events, the player and their partner decide to leave Serene Village for Lively Town. The students meet the pair to say farewell, as well as handing over farewell letters written to them by the other villagers.

Espurr later becomes involved in defeating the Dark Matter after the player and partner meet Espurr in Serene Village when they find out that Krookodile had been seen heading towards the village. While Mr. Nuzleaf turns all Pokémon on top of Revelation Mountain into stone, Espurr avoids this by being forced to work with Mr. Nuzleaf. However, Espurr acts as a double agent and begins to assist the Expedition Society by contacting Ampharos telepathically.

Personalities and characteristics

  • Pancham teases the other students and sometimes deliberately puts them in dangerous situations or tries to scare them. The only exception to this is Shelmet. He finds the player's partner very annoying. At one point, the player's partner believes that Pancham secretly wants to be their friend. He also cares for Deerling.
  • Shelmet mostly simply follows Pancham and finds Pancham's teasing, etc. of the others amusing. He also has a crush on Audino. Like Pancham, he cares for Deerling.
  • Deerling is a friend of Goomy and Espurr. She often speaks what is on her mind and has a short temper.
  • Goomy is the youngest student and Deerling's friend. He is afraid of ghosts.
  • Espurr is Deerling's friend. She is a kind Pokémon. When she is in danger, she is brave and caring, but also calculating.
