Its appearance is based on that of a fully-grown lion. It has three rings on the backs of its legs, similar to Luxio (which has two) and Shinx (which has one).
Luxray is one of only two second stage Lightning Pokémon in the TCG that was released in the same generation as its evolutionary relatives, the other being Ampharos.
Unlike most Electric-types, Luxray has Speed as its lowest stat. It shares this trait with Ampharos as well.
Luxray is derived from lux, a measure of brightness, and x-ray, referring to its x-ray eyes.
Its Japanese name is a combination of Roentgen, the physicist who discovered X-rays, and トラー torā, Japanese for "tiger." Its German name, Luxtra, comes from lux and Strahl.
