Sophocles's Charjabug (Japanese: マーマネのデンヂムシ Māmane's Denjimushi) is Sophocles's first caught Pokémon, and his second overall.
History
As a wild Pokémon
In SM026, Ash was looking for a farewell present for Sophocles due to the latter soon moving away, and decided to go look for a Charjabug at the Rotom Pokédex's suggestion. With the help of Pikachu, Rockruff, and Litten, he was able to track one down. Litten and Rockruff dug it up from its place underground. Charjabug showed off its defensive nature by shocking Ash as he impetuously reached to grab it from its burrowing state. After recuperating from his zapping, Ash and his Pokémon managed to capture it in a cage. He brought it along with him to Sophocles's farewell party, where he let it out of the cage and showed it off to Sophocles. Sophocles was surprised by Ash's kindness and sent out Togedemaru to battle Charjabug.
Charjabug was able to deflect one Zing Zap and fight back with Discharge, but was quickly defeated by one more Zing Zap that Togedemaru pummeled it with. She managed to weaken Charjabug enough for Sophocles to feel comfortable enough throwing a Poké Ball at it. Sophocles expressed so much excitement at the prospect of catching Charjabug that he nearly fell over while throwing the Ball, and expressed even more excitement at its capture.
With Sophocles
After capturing Charjabug and receiving a final gift of a lei from Lillie, Sophocles finally decided to reveal to his friends that he was only moving down the street and that the whole situation of him leaving was a big misunderstanding. Later, Sophocles and Togedemaru decided to give Charjabug a test run with Togedemaru's wheel. Charjabug initially refused to move, but with the encouragement of its new trainer and partner, Charjabug eventually started to run on the wheel.
Personality and characteristics
Ash found out the hard way that Charjabug is a defensive creature
Before Charjabug was caught, it was introduced while hiding underground. It shocked Ash when he impulsively grabbed it, showing that Charjabug has a defensive nature. When it battled against Sophocles's Togedemaru, despite it quickly attacking the Roly-Poly Pokémon back to defend itself, but it was quickly defeated by one more attack. In addition to seeming weak in battle and relying on hiding underground whilst living in the wild, it seems to be a bit unsure about itself, as evidenced by its reluctance to run on Togedemaru's wheel until further encouraged by its trainer.
