Azurill is the child of Tracey's Marill, though it is unknown which Pokémon was the other parent. Misty mentioned that Tracey gave it to her when it was just an Egg.
Later, Azurill accompanied Misty on her return to the Cerulean Gym, and the group on their way to the Battle Factory. In A Real Cleffa-Hanger, Team Rocket attacked the group as they picnicked at the foot of Mt. Moon. Azurill, notably, befriended a wildCleffa who had become separated from its family. The group eventually foiled another Team Rocket scheme and help the Cleffa reunite with its family. Afterwards, Misty, with Azurill in her arms, leave Ash and the others to return to the Cerulean Gym.
Personality and characteristics

Despite being small, Azurill has already been shown to be powerful, helping fend off Team Rocket in The Right Place and the Right Mime. Much like Togepi before it, Azurill is usually held in Misty's arms.
As a baby Pokémon, Azurill is very playful, as seen when it was playing with a wildCleffa, using its ball-like tail to entertain the Star Shape Pokémon. It is also very sociable, helpful, and friendly towards other Pokémon, as seen when it healed Pikachu from his injuries by using Refresh.
