(Japanese: ポケモンピクロス Pokémon Picross) is an unreleased puzzle game for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color announced in various game magazines in Spring 1999. A picross, from picture and crossword, is a genre of puzzle games, also known as a nonogram. It was developed by Jupiter Corporation.
Gameplay
The player must complete all of the picross puzzles in each world. Completed levels will be marked with Pokéballs; if the puzzle is finished in a select amount of time, it will be marked with a Master Ball instead. Pikachu appears in the top-left corner of the screen, cheering the player on; along the way, more Pokémon are "captured" and can be selected (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, and Clefairy). There is also a tutorial mode with easier puzzles, which is guided by Misty.
The game was intended to work with the Game Boy Printer. It also has a Super Game Boy border.
History
Though Pokémon Picross was never released, the SNES game Picross NP Vol. 1 released in 1999 included 12 Pokémon puzzles.
The international versions of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver featured a game similar to picross at the Goldenrod Game Corner, Voltorb Flip.
Pokémon Picross, a freemium game for the Nintendo 3DS also developed by Jupiter Corporation, was released on the Nintendo eShop in December 2015.
In September 2020, a rom of Pokémon Picross was found and dumped along with several other Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles. This rom shows the game in an essentially finished state, albeit only in Japanese.
