That battle was against Ash, not Trip. Bouffalant was clearly still in battling condition (as pointed out by Trip), and it could even be argued on whether or not it qualified as a "battle" to begin with, given that Alder fell asleep right before the battle was supposed to begin and the only attack he ordered was used on him instead.
