The Stellar type (Japanese: ステラタイプ Stellar type) is a type that exists only in Generation IX. Unlike other types, no Pokémon or moves bear it naturally, being exclusive to the Terastallized state of a Pokémon.

Battle properties

Uniquely, the Stellar type has no defensive properties, as a Stellar-type Pokémon will always retain its original typing's Defensive properties, aside from the Terastallized state itself being weak to Stellar-type Tera Blast and Tera Starstorm. As such, outside of Terastallizing, any attempts to change a Pokémon's type into the Stellar type (such as the moves Conversion 2 or Reflect Type) will fail.

Additional effects

When a Pokémon Terastallizes into the Stellar type, it gains increased STAB for every move type, but only once per type; 2x for original types and 1.2x for every other type. After a move is used, no other moves of that same type will receive increased STAB from being Terastallized. In Tera Raid Battles, all moves will be boosted in this manner without limit.

When either Tera Blast or Tera Starstorm are this type, it has a special interaction, dealing super effective damage against Terastallized targets. Stellar-type Tera Blast also has the drawback of lowering the user’s Attack and Sp. Atk stats by one stage. Other moves cannot be changed into the Stellar type.

Pokémon

No Pokémon are naturally Stellar-type, but they can become Stellar-type through Terastallization. Terapagos's Tera Type is fixed as Stellar, and as such, its Stellar Form can only exist as a Stellar-type.

Moves

These moves are naturally Normal-type, but they become Stellar-type and have special changes if the user Terastallizes into the Stellar type.

Gen Move Category Contest Power Accuracy PP Range Description
IX Tera Blast Special 80 100% 10 (max 16)

Normal
Inflicts damage with the user’s Attack or Sp. Atk stat— whichever is higher. Super effective against Terastallized targets. This lowers the user’s Attack and Sp. Atk stats.
IX Tera Starstorm Special 120 100% 5 (max 8)

Many Others
With the power of its crystals, the user bombards and eliminates the target. When used by Terapagos in its Stellar Form, this move damages all opposing Pokémon.

Trivia

  • This is the only type to be exclusive to a transformation mechanic. Likewise, it is the only type a Pokémon can not be without the mechanic.
  • Written in katakana, ステラタイプ (Stellar type) is an anagram of テラスタイプ (Teras Type), the Japanese word for Tera Type.
  • As Ogerpon cannot change its Tera Type independently of its masks, it is the only Pokémon accessible in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that can never become the Stellar Type.
  • The Stellar type, along with the rest of the Terastal phenomenon, was created by Terapagos. Pokémon gain the Stellar Tera Type due to the influence of the crystals found in the Area Zero Underdepths.
