This is a list of Trainers that use Pokémon with types outside of their specialty.

In the games

The following list only considers battles where the Trainer is battling with their specialty in mind. For example, Cheren uses Pokémon of many types when battled as a Rival, but restricts himself to only Normal types when being challenged as a Gym Leader.

The idea of a "specialist" is somewhat vague, so this list leaves out some Trainers that have a preference or tendency to use a certain type, but do strictly adhere to it, such as Colress. If the Trainer is not a Gym Leader or Elite Four member, they must use two or more Pokémon that share a single type for at least two consecutive battles to be considered a specialist for the purposes of this list.

If the Trainer is able to Terastallize their Pokémon, it will count towards their specialty type.

Trivia

  • Gyarados, Steelix, and Lillipup are the most commonly used Pokémon that do not match the specialist's type.
  • No specialist who is battleable in Generation VI uses Pokémon outside of their specialty.
  • Drayton would not use any Pokémon outside of his specialty if his Sceptile could undergo Mega Evolution.
