Totodile is a bipedal, crocodilianPokémon with well-developed jaws. It has red eyes with ridges above them, black markings around its eyes, and several sharp teeth. On its chest is a yellow, V-shaped marking that extends to its arms; there is a thin line through the center of the marking. Totodile has five fingers and three toes. Down its back is a row of three red spines with a small, red ridge on either side. The tip of its tail has a single red spine as well.
Totodile tends to be both playful and rough by nature and has a habit of biting anything it sees, including its Trainer. Despite its size, Totodile's jaws are capable of crushing anything, so it sometimes causes serious injuries. Turning one's back on Totodile is considered to be a bad idea as it can bite without warning. Totodile are scarce in the wild, though it can be found around bodies of water like rivers, ponds, and lakes. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Totodile and its evolutions are known to sleep with one eye open and rest only half of its brain at a time — a practice known as unihemispheric sleep. This practice is hypothesized to be a defense mechanism against enemy attacks.
Totodile made its debut in Don't Touch That 'dile, where it was a prospective first partner Pokémon offered by Professor Elm. It fled from his care and found Team Rocket, whereupon it chomped down on Jessie's hair. Ash and his friends eventually managed to get Totodile back to Professor Elm.
Totodile, the Big Jaw Pokémon. Its highly developed jaw is so powerful, it can crush practically anything. Trainers beware: this Pokémon loves to use its teeth.
In Magical Pokémon Journey, Pikachu and Clefairy meet a Totodile in The Happiness Clover. Totodile tricks Pikachu and Clefairy into finding him a four-leaf clover, though in the end he admits to tricking them and they become friends.
Silver stole a Totodile from Professor Elm's lab in Sneasel Sneak Attack, though it first appeared in Murkrow Row. He was then able to evolve into a Croconaw after destroying a built-in iron ball trap with Exbo's help, but being left in a coma after his Trainer and Gold's defeat against the Masked Man left him unable to evolve until the fight with an outraged Lugia enticed all three of the Johtofirst partner Pokémon to evolve. With his increased strength and Surf ability, he is the major mainstay of Silver's team.
Totodile was the only Generation II first partner Pokémon to appear only as a random trophy, not in a Poké Ball.
Melee trophy information
"Little but feisty is the best description for these Water-type Pokémon. The first thing they do when they see something move is latch onto it with their powerful jaws. Totodile was one of the three Pokémon that Professor Elm offered to Trainers in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. They evolve into Croconaw."
Brawl trophy information
"A Big Jaw Pokémon. This alligator-like Pokémon stands on two legs. It has a small body but an impressive jaw that boasts potent bite power. It can do serious damage to someone even if it's just playing. Its tendency to chomp down on anything that moves in front of it means Trainers have to be extra cautious around it. When it levels up, it evolves into Croconaw."
Despite the smallness of its body, Totodile's jaws are very powerful. While the Pokémon may think it is just playfully nipping, its bite has enough power to cause serious injury.

Totodile appears to be based on a baby crocodilian. The yellow marking on its chest may be a reference to the yellow stripes on young American alligators. In Pokémon Sleep, Totodile and its evolutions are revealed to sleep with one eye open, just like real-life crocodiles. The crest on Totodile's head is similar to the mohawk hairstyle which may allude to Totodile's boisterous personality.
Name origin
Totodile may be a combination of tot and crocodile.
Waninoko may be taken to mean 鰐の子 wani no ko (child of a crocodile/alligator).
