The X Sp. Atk (Japanese: スペシャルアップSpecial Up), known as X Special prior to Generation VI, is a type of battle item introduced in Generation I. It temporarily boosts a Pokémon's Special Attack stat. In Generation I, it boosted the Special stat.
At Join Avenue's Market, X Special can be bought in dozens at $3150 each, which equates to $262.5 per X Special.
Effect
Generation I
When used from the Bag during battle, it raises the Special of a Pokémon currently in battle by 1 level.
Generations II to VI
When used from the Bag during battle, it raises the Special Attack of a Pokémon currently in battle by 1 level. It also increases the Pokémon's friendship a little.
Generation VII onward
When used from the Bag during battle, it raises the Special Attack of a Pokémon currently in battle by 2 levels. It also increases the Pokémon's friendship a little.
Wonder Launcher
The X Special appears as four Wonder Launcher items, increasing the Special Attack stat by 1, 2, 3 or 6 levels. It costs 3, 5, 7, or 11 points to use respectively.
In Pokémon Masters EX, X Sp. Atks can only be used by certain sync pairs who have them as an item move. In addition, a variant of X Sp. Atk called X Sp. Atk All can be used by certain sync pairs. Both of these item moves have 2 MP. An X Sp. Atk only raises the user's Special Attack, while an X Sp. Atk All raises the Special Attack of all allies. A full list of all sync pairs who can learn X Sp. Atk or X Sp. Atk All can be found here.
X Special was a Trainer card that was due to be released in the Pokémon Trading Figure Game expansion, Groundbreakers, but due to the discontinuation of the TFG as a whole, it was never released. It adds two stars to a chosen Pokémon's Purple attacks.
