The fifth route that Trainers from New Bark Town encounter, Route 33 is a short route that travels west to Azalea Town. This route is not very long, since Trainers have already traveled through Union Cave and passed Route 32 to reach this clearing. After exiting Union Cave through a small opening, the player will find a small clearing with a sign. After climbing down the stairs or jumping the ledge, the player can either go west or find a patch of tall grass where Pokémon from previous routes appear. By going west, the player will be able to find a Berry tree on which a PSNCureBerry grows, as well as a single Trainer, a Hiker, who can be battled. By continuing west, the player will finally reach Azalea Town, the next town on the Trainer's quest.
In Generation IV, Route 33 is a little different from before. It is now always raining, and the rain is effective during battles. There are also two Apricorn trees now in the place of the single Berry tree. The right-hand tree holds a Blk Apricorn, while the left-hand tree holds a Pnk Apricorn.

In the tall grass, Pokémon of every type, including Water- and Grass-type Pokémon, occasionally display an unhappy face since they have to take shelter from the rain and splash around in wet grass.
Route 33 appeared in Good 'Quil Hunting, where Ash and his friends were seen traveling through the forested route on their way to Azalea Town. Along the way, they encountered a Trainer named Koji, who was looking for a Cyndaquil. The idea of catching a Cyndaquil excited Ash enough for him to start looking for one as well. He eventually found one, and soon ended up catching it in order to protect it from the explosion of Team Rocket's mecha.
Despite Ash clearly having caught Cyndaquil first, Koji demanded to have a battle with Ash, with the winner getting to keep Cyndaquil. Although Cyndaquil mostly just kept dodging Koji's Sandslash's attacks and had trouble in using Flamethrower, Ash eventually won the battle, officially making Cyndaquil the newest member of his team.
