Larry (Japanese: アオキ Aoki) is a businessman who works for the Paldea region's Pokémon League, where he serves as the Gym Leader of Medali's Gym, known officially as the Medali Gym, and a member of Paldea's Elite Four. He specializes in Normal-type Pokémon as a Gym Leader and Flying-type Pokémon as an Elite Four member.

In the core series games

Appearance

Larry is depicted as a middle-aged man of average height and build. His most unique features belong to his face, with prominent cheekbones, grey eyes in the shape of squares (alongside his pupils), square gray eyebrows, and black hair with numerous gray quiffs shooting off from it.

Larry wears a light black suit, consisting of a blazer, trousers and formal shoes. Beneath his suit is a gray long-sleeve button-downed shirt with a pale-blue tie with a cloud outline pattern, referencing his specialization as an Elite Four member.

As with every other member of the Elite Four of Paldea, Larry wears black gloves with the logo of Paldea's Pokémon League, which resembles a white compass, upon them.

Larry is always seen holding a black briefcase, which he puts down before battles.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Website Blurb: This Normal-type Gym Leader is also a businessman, and he’s not very motivated. When he gets lost in thought, he becomes so still that onlookers begin to worry.

Larry is a serious, brooding man who works for Paldea's Pokémon League under Geeta, who assigned him the roles of both a Gym Leader and Elite Four member. He also works as a businessman on top of his Pokémon League duties. He is often unmotivated, and becomes unsettlingly still whenever he is lost in thought, much to the worry of people nearby.[2] According to Iono in Pokémon: Paldean Winds, Larry has been a member of the Paldea League for 25 years.

He uses Normal-type Pokémon at his Gym because he feels they reflect his ordinary image. In addition to the Gym Badge, Larry gives out TM025 (Facade) when defeated. During the Champion Assessment, he is the third Elite Four member to be faced and uses a team of Flying-type Pokémon per Geeta's request, much to his dismay.

Outside of his Pokémon League duties, he is known for his fixation with food, and regularly visits the Treasure Eatery of Medali, which also serves as the arena for his Gym battles.

The Indigo Disk

After completing the main story, Larry can be invited to Unova's Blueberry Academy as a special coach. When challenged to a rematch, he battles as a Gym Leader, though he retains some Flying-type Pokémon from his team when battled as one of the Elite Four.

Larry may converse with other Trainers present in the League Club Room.

Pokémon

As a Gym Leader, Larry's team consists of Normal types, while he uses Flying types as an Elite Four member. In the rematch with him at the Blueberry Academy's League Club Room, his team will be made up of both Normal and Flying types. His signature Pokémon is Staraptor.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Larry debuted in Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!. He was seen in a flashback, eating at the Treasure Eatery while Friede met with Lucca there.

In HZ046, Larry appeared with the other members of the Elite Four watching Liko's battle against Ann at Naranja Academy.

In HZ055, Larry battled Coral and Kofu as part of the Elite Four Tag Battle, only for Coral to have her Glalie use Self-Destruct, knocking out all of their Pokémon and leaving Larry the winner by default.

In HZ057, Larry was assigned as Dot's next challenge for the Terastal Training course.

In HZ058, Larry appeared during the reopening of the new menu at Anything Eatery. After the meal, he left without attracting much attention, but was noticed by Dot when he left.

In HZ059, Larry was Dot's opponent for her second Terastal battle, where he used both his Staraptor and Dudunsparce against Dot's Quaxly and Tinkatink. Even after Dot's Quaxly evolved into Quaxwell and put up a great fight by Terastallizing, Larry was still able to win by Terastallizing his Staraptor in turn. Despite her loss, Larry still approved Dot for her opportunistic use of Terastallization. Afterwards, when Dot and her friends ate some rice balls at the Treasure Eatery, Larry was forced to pay their bill, much to his dismay.

Pokémon

Similar to the games, Larry uses two completely different teams of Pokémon, one team for challenges as a Gym Leader and another for battles as an Elite Four member.

This listing is of Larry's known Pokémon in the anime:

As a Gym Leader
Dudunsparce
Larry's Dudunsparce
Debut HZ059

Dudunsparce is Larry's third known Pokémon. It was used during Dot's Terastal Training test, where it faced both Quaxly and Tinkatink. It was able to gain the upper hand on Quaxly when it paralyzed him with Glare. It then battled Tinkatink before being recalled in favor of Staraptor after their attacks seemed evenly matched.

Dudunsparce's known moves are Glare, Boomburst, and Hyper Drill.

Staraptor Normal Tera Type
Larry's Staraptor
Larry's Terastallized Staraptor
Debut HZ059

Staraptor is Larry's fourth known Pokémon. It was used to battle Tinkatink and Quaxly during Dot's Terastal Training test battle, where it was swapped in to replace Dudunsparce and quickly defeated Tinkatink. Despite receiving major damage from Dot's newly evolved Quaxwell, it was still able to defeat him after Terastallizing while Quaxwell was immobilized by paralysis.

Staraptor's known moves are Wing Attack, Hurricane, Air Slash, and Facade.

As an Elite Four member
Flamigo
Larry's Flamigo
Debut HZ055

Flamigo is Larry's first known Pokémon. It was used alongside Oricorio in his battle against Coral and Kofu, only to be defeated when Coral's Glalie used Self-Destruct.

None of Flamigo's moves are known.

Oricorio
Larry's Oricorio
Debut HZ055

Oricorio is Larry's second known Pokémon. It was used alongside Flamigo in his battle against Coral and Kofu, only to be defeated when Coral's Glalie used Self-Destruct.

None of Oricorio's moves are known.

Main article: Larry (Paradox Rift 165)

Larry was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Raging Surf subset and the English Paradox Rift expansion, with artwork by Akira Komayama. A Full Art ultra rare version with artwork by the same illustrator was released in the same sets. It allows players to flip a coin and search their deck for up to 2 Pokémon of any kind if they flip heads, or 1 Basic Pokémon if they flip tails.

Trivia

  • Larry's Japanese Gym Leader title is 非凡サラリーマン Extraordinary Salaryman.
  • As both a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member, Larry is the first character in the games to fill two different positions in the same Pokémon League simultaneously.
  • Larry's specialization in Flying types is hinted at by the cloud patterns on his tie and his ace Pokémon as a Gym Leader being part Flying-type.
    • Him specializing in both Normal and Flying types is likely a reference to how the Normal/Flying type combination is the most common type combination amongst dual-type Pokémon.
  • Larry is the only Paldean Gym Leader in the core series to:
    • Terastallize a Pokémon already of his type specialization.
    • Terastallize more than one Pokémon.
    • Battle inside a building instead of outdoors.
  • During the Champion Assessment, Larry's Altaria does not know any Flying-type moves, making Larry the only member of the Paldean Elite Four to use a Pokémon that does not know any moves with the specialty type of its Trainer.
  • During his Gym battle, Larry's Dudunsparce is female, but during the rematch, it is male.
  • During the battle at the League Club at Blueberry Academy, Larry's team uses a mixture of both Normal and Flying types.
  • In the fourth episode of Pokémon: Paldean Winds, Iono confirms that Larry has been part of the Pokémon League for 25 years.
