Origin
Hariyama is based on a sumo wrestler .
Name origin
Hariyama's name is a shortening of its Japanese name, Hariteyama. Its name may be a combination of 張り合う hariau , to compete with, 張り倒す haritaosu , to knock down, and 山 yama , mountain. Hariyama literally means 針山, pincushion, and it is also a sumo ranking.
