Jungle (Japanese: ?) is the name given to the first expansion of new cards and Theme Decks for the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Set size
Jungle contains 64 cards in America, 48 in Japan.
Sequence
Jungle is the 2nd set both in America and Japan.
Release date
- Summer 1997 - Japanese Expansion
- 16th June 1999 - American Expansion
Miscellaneous
- Jungle originally contained 48 cards in Japan, however in North America it was expanded to 64 cards since Wizards of the Coast decided to make non-holographic versions of the rares (which were originally holos), much to the annoyance of some collectors. This was a recurrent event that Wizards used in many sets to make the sets larger.
- Jungle was originally planned to be released in North America around August (and rumored as late as October), however since Topps was releasing their Pokémon trading cards early in the summer, WotC decided to push Jungle far ahead of schedule to June 16th. Within two weeks, 1st Edition Jungle was nowhere to be seen. Unlimited Jungle was released shortly thereafter.
- The 1st Edition print run of Jungle also contained the extremely rare 1st Edition Promo Pikachu #1. Word is that there was 1 of these to every 10 boxes, making it very valuable.
- Proof of then-MediaFactory's mismanagement of the game begins early; there is only one Psychic Pokémon in the set, Mr. Mime. Not to mention all the rares were holo. It's amazing how the secondary market in Japan survived to begin with.
- Jungle Contains only one trainer card, which is Pokéball.
