Slaking (Japanese: ケッキング Kekking) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Vigoroth starting at level 36. It is the final form of Slakoth.

Behavior

Slaking are the laziest of all Pokémon. They spend most of their time lying in grassy fields to eat barely doing anything; however, when threatened, they will suddenly get up and strike with great power. If the grass they've eaten around them is gone, they move to a new spot with more grass.

Slaking usually eat grass that is in reach of them. Slaking also eat fruit, but they just wait until the fruits fall down from the trees instead just climbing up and picking them.

Slaking appears in Love, Petalburg Style, belonging to May's father, Norman, the Gym Leader of Petalburg City.

In the following episode, Ash's Grovyle defeats it in battle, winning Ash the Balance Badge.

A giant Slaking appears in Slaking Kong, but it was really a robot controlled by Team Rocket.

Norman's Slaking appeared in Strategy With a Smile! watching the Wallace Cup on television with Norman.

In the manga

In the manga, Norman's signature Pokémon is a Slaking, just as in the anime and games.

Trivia

• Slaking has the fifth highest attack of any Pokémon in any game. It is tied with Regigigas and is surpassed by Rampardos, Medicham, Deoxys's Attack Forme and Marowak (only when holding the Thick Club).
• Slaking has the highest base stat average of any non-legendary Pokémon, though its ability significantly ruins its potential for unexperienced players.
• Although Slaking is said to slack off like Slakoth, it does not lose any of its added speed upon evolving from Vigoroth and it actually has a higher speed, but its ability makes it slack off.
• In double battles, Slaking's Truant ability can easily be nullified using Skill Swap or Gastro Acid. Several trainers in Pokémon Emerald use this power, including Norman during the player's rematches with him. Without Truant, Slaking can make full use of its impressive stats.

Origin

It appears to draw inspiration from sloths and some form of ape. The inspiration from sloths makes it somewhat resemble a Megatherium, also known as the Giant Ground Sloth, however, it more closely resembles a gorilla.

Name origin

Slaking's name is a combination of slake, meaning to slacken, and king, and/or possibly just the word slacking. Its Japanese name is a combination of 怠ける namakeru, to be idle, or 怠け者 namakemono, sloth, and king.
