Water-type Pokémon:
Characteristics
Defensively, the Water-type is very strong when combined with high defensive stats. Every Water-type, with the exception of Magikarp, can use Ice-type moves to counter Grass-types, (although Magikarp can learn one Flying-type move, Bounce, which can also counter Grass-types) so Electric is the only true threat to Water-types. That is not the case if the Pokémon in question are part Ground like Quagsire, Swampert, Whiscash, and Gastrodon.
The Water-type is also useful offensively. Water-type Pokémon can learn Ice Beam to deal with Dragon and Grass-types, which would make their resistance to Water-type attacks irrelevant. It can be extremely useful to be super-effective against Ground- and Template:Type2s when traveling through caves, etc. As a result of these advantages, as well as having to get through water routes using Surf, most trainers usually have at least one Water-type in their party.
In total, there are 92 Pokémon with the Water-type.

Trivia
- Of all seventeen types, the Water-type is the most abundant, with 92 Pokémon species, nearly 19% of the entire known Pokédex, being of the Water-type. This probably reflects the abundance of different species of lifeforms that inhabit the real world's oceans, lakes and rivers.
- All Generation I Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric moves because there were no dual Dragon-, Electric-, or Template:Type2s to neutralize the weakness and dual Water/Template:Type2 Pokémon were not introduced until Generation II.
- All pokemon with a X1/4 resistance to Water by now are Water-types themselfs.
- Each Generation has at least one Water type Pokémon that start with the letters L, M, P, & S.
- Every main protagonist in the anime (with the obvious exception of Max) has had at least one Water-type Pokémon. Ash has Squirtle, Kingler, Totodile, Corphish and Buizel and had Lapras, all of Misty's Pokémon except Togetic and Azurill are Water-types, Brock has Ludicolo and Marshtomp, Tracey has Marill, May has Wartortle, Dawn has Piplup and used to have Buizel, Jessie had Shellder and Magikarp, and James had Gyarados.
- It is currently the only Pokémon type so far to have been focused on a Pokémon movie (said movie being Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea).
