Dratini are serpentine Pokémon that inhabit lakes and rivers. They possess fins on the sides of their heads as well as a large, round silver nose on their face. They are constantly growing, and can become quite long. As they grow, they shed their delicate deep blue skin. Dratini also seem to have a much more stocky body than their evolved form.

Behavior
Dratini are timid, elusive, and extremely shy Pokémon, causing them to be rarely seen, making people to believe it is a myth among certain communities in Kanto.
Dratini are said to be nonexistent or one-of-a-kind Pokémon, as they are so rare. However, they are found in several places, including the Kanto Safari Zone, Dragon's Den, and Mt. Coronet.
Dratini first appeared in EP035. The Warden of the Safari Zone was protecting the Tiny Dragon Pokémon. The episode was banned from English-audience due to excessive use of a firearm.
Dratini was also in Beauty is Skin Deep. This Dratini belonged to Clair and Team Rocket wanted to steal it from her. Clair's Dratini evolved into a Dragonair at the end of the episode.
Dratini was seen in a flashback of Lance's as a Pokémon harmed by human industrialization. This motivated Lance to formulate his plot to destroy humanity many years later.
Dratini continually molts and sloughs off its old skin. It does so because the life energy within its body steadily builds to reach uncontrollable levels.

Controversy in the episode where Dratini is introduced caused the episode to be banned from American audiences due to a character placing a gun in Ash's face (among a few others). Dratini and Dragonair have made appearances since, unlike other Pokémon from banned episodes.
Dratini's Red, Blue, and Green sprites looked more like snakes or worms than dragons because of the stripes on its underbelly (which were removed in Yellow).
Dratini is the first Template:Type2 Pokémon by National Pokédex order. It is also the last Pokémon to have a Generation I type that is not shared with a Pokémon of a lower number.
Dratini's evolutionary family is the only Dragon-type family in Generation I.
Dratini and its evolutions share the same species name with Horsea and its evolutions, and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.
In its Gold and SilverTemplate:Shiny2 sprites, it's shown to be a slightly darker blue. However in the newer games, its shiny form is a lighter shade of purple.
Also, in its Generation III sprites, its body is colored purple. This was reverted to blue in its Diamond and Pearl sprites.
Dratini's name appears to be a combination of dragon and teeny, meaning small. Despite this, it is fairly large for a Pokémon, being nearly six feet (1.8 meters) in length. Its Japanese name, a combination of miniature and 竜 ryū, dragon, has a similar meaning.
