The Pokémon in Pokémon Gold and Silver were just a few of many different designs that Game Freak created. Only 100 new Pokémon were added, and even those often went through redesigns before making it into the final product.
Unreleased Pokémon
Kurusu
- This creature resembles a puppy, but with flippers rather then legs. It doesn't seem to have much relation to any Pokémon as of yet, meaning its design or concept may have been totally scrapped. There is some possibility it later was reworked slightly and changed into Spheal or the East Sea Shellos or Gastrodon.
Honōguma
- Honōguma's name is a combination of 炎 honō for flame, and 熊 kuma for bear. It would seem that it was either altered into or replaced by Cyndaquil. It could also be part of the Pikachu evolutionary line.
Unnamed mammal
- A strange creature that appeared as art, but was never released. It has been said to resemble Hitmontop or Meowth. It is also reminiscent of Chansey and Clefairy.
Unnamed turtle
- A turtle Pokémon that was never released. It's possible it was later heavily reworked into Torkoal. It may also be a prototype of Shuckle or Turtwig.
Unown Forms
- Forms of Unown that were never released. Appeared in the The Spell of the Unown.
Altered Pokémon
Bukū
- Bukū's name is derived from "fugu", the Japanese word for blowfish. It's likely it was a prototype for Qwilfish, or else possibly a pre-evolution for Qwilfish that was scrapped.
Happa
- Happa's name simply means "leaf" in Japanese. It appears to be an early design of Chikorita.
Kirinriki
- Concept art for an early design of Girafarig.
Mariru
- This purple creature was early art for Marill.
Pikachu
- Early artwork of Pikachu
Tyranitar
- Early art of Tyranitar.

Male Trainer
- Art of a male Trainer that was never used.
